Hi everyone.
I'm on holiday in the USA and my fasting blood glucose is up to 10.6!!! Don't know what to do to lower it. Has anyone got any suggestions? Had a burger last night but only ate half of the bun. Got some wholewheat bread for breakfasts but it's really sweet and got loads of sugar in it, so now eating sour dough bread. On 500mg of Metformin once a day as any more gives me really bad diarrhoea. Getting a bit upset as don't know what to do. Any help would be great.

Do you have a pool, a nice swim would help a bit. Can you avoid the bread?

Here, in the US, many familiar foods are not quite the same, they are geared up for the American palate which tends to be a somewhat sweeter.... I'd avoid baked goods (breads, cookies, cake etc) & foods slathered in BBQ sauce

One bit of advice is that the chain restaurants typically have nutritional datasheets available, it may be a pain to have to read these before ordering but they can guide you to make the right choices.

Good choice to change from sweet tasting bread to sour dough - hope that helps.
Travel in USA usually means big portions, high calorie food and less chance to walk in towns / cities, which are set up for car driving. How much longer is you holiday?

Hi, thanks everyone. I'm here for another 3 weeks. There is a pool and I swim everyday. Also we get out everyday and walk, and walk, and walk. I've got some fruit and total natural yoghurt for breakfast tomorrow.

Sounds like a very active holiday! Hopefully, that high level was just a blip 🙂 Enjoy your holiday 🙂

Sounds great, Lynn, BTW where are you?

Well it's gone down from 10.6 to 10.2 today. Not good but at least it's down a bit. See how today goes. Martin Canty, we are in Hawaii. Taking the bus up to Waimea Valley today, walking up to the falls, then swim there before walking back. Then to our pool for more swimming. Going to try and cut out anything with bread today. Fruit and yoghurt for breakfast. Thanks again everyone.

Great, Hawaii is just beautiful. Enjoy yourself....

Tip for lunch, go into a supermarket & check out the Poke (marinated Ahi, they just have a great variety of flavors)... one eats it raw & is very low in carbs

I'm wondering if the timezone change would have had an effect, as your body clock expects food to be eaten at UK times, so perhaps your liver has been releasing some stored glucose during sleep?

It's down to 9.7 today so quite happy that it's going the right way. Red kite, you may be right, I never thought of that.
I was diagnosed last July and have just been on the xpert course, thought I was getting my head round it and then came here. I'll get there. Have to have my HBA1C when I get back, not looking forward to those results. Hopefully my GP will change my meds, without the side effects of metformin.
