My son was diagnosed with type 1 a few months ago and has been coping pretty well until about 3 weeks ago he started getting pains in his stomach and not being able to empty his bowels for a few days, now he can’t stop and has had the runs on and off for days now. It’s getting him down, am I worrying too much

Could he be dehydrated @Louise38 ? Sometimes what looks like ‘the runs’ can be leakage around an area of constipation. High blood sugar and/or not drinking enough water can impact things (literally).

When he was diagnosed, was he screened for coeliac too?

I think you/he should speak to your/his GP just to get some reassurance if nothing else.

Hi.

I remember from your other posts, your son is 24, isn't he? What medication is he on?
Can you also tell us a bit about how he came to be diagnosed? Just wondering if he was hospitalized with DKA and if so, how bad that was as that might give us an insight into what may be going on with his digestive system.
Has he changed his diet recently? I know when I started eating low carb I got constipated until I introduced more fibre into my diet and Metformin is renowned for causing digestive upset but if he is Type 1 he is unlikely to be prescribed Metformin, but it would help if you can clarify that.
If you can give us that information, then we might have a better idea but it is probably best to speak to his GP or nurse to let them know he is having problems.

Hi there, yes I think he’s well hydrated. He wasn’t screened for coeliac so maybe we should mention that, thankyou

Hi there, yes he’s 24,he takes lantus and novorapid, he wasn’t hospitalised with DKA and has felt relatively ok until about 3 weeks ago and started with the tummy pains. We’ve been trying 111 for half an hour now and still haven’t got through it’s so frustrating

Pleased you are seeking medical advice. Hope you get through soon. It may be coeliac or it could just be that the DKA has messed with his gut flora. Please let us know the result of any tests etc. Good luck getting it sorted.

Hi Louise,

Just wanted to pop in to wish your son the best. Diabetes medication can upset the stomach some times so it may just be that but it's definitely worth ruling out other issues.

Do let us know how he gets on.

@Louise38 - out of the blue last Thursday wham, belly pains, the runs (and violent wind (TMI)) for no apparent reason, we'd both eaten exactly the same things. I did resort to Imodium on Monday cos if the exaggerated looseness continues, the Oooh my 'orifice' is jolly sore now has been known to become piles for me and is miserable, so I'd rather nip it in the bud thanks. I mean husband thinks I'm weird anyway since regular for him is twice a day, only a bit ? if it's 3 times so he hasn't got the runs until it gets beyond 3 - whereas Jenny is also regular, every couple of days! Be weird for me if I went every day. Anyway, got up a couple of times during the night on Monday and did have a more normal pooh yesterday - but though I've been well hydrated throughout until yesterday I hadn't eaten very much, so will have to wait and see....

I'm currently thinking it must just be a combination of stinking hot weather and the fact I exerted myself more than usual the end of last week.

NB - I do not recommend Imodium to anyone not well aware of the problems the other way that it can itself cause and stress that it only ever treats the symptoms ie stops the runs dead and not what has caused it.

Frankly - after this length of time - your son really SHOULD ring 111 !

Hope you managed to get through eventually Louise. Let us know what happens 🙂
