At risk of diabetes
I am in complete shock I had my HbA1c results back and despite reducing level 6 months ago it is now a whopping 82!
since getting a reading last Sept of 49 I changed my diet to LCHF eating 50-70g carbs per day and 6 weeks later HbA1c was down to 44 I have lost 2 stone and am in a healthy Bmi range. I have maintained low carb diet for the past 6 months.
I could not believe the result today and I’m totally baffled by it.
I have a BG monitor and never go higher than 7.1 2 hours after eating. One example is a higher carb meal one day last week which was 4.7 before the meal and 5.6 2 hours later, total carbs were 36.8.
There are no hidden carbs I count them using an app.
I have to make GP appt and so wanted some advice first?

At first sight your readings are inconsistent with an HbA1c of 82 which would imply an average of finger prick readings in low double figures.

I reckon I would be asking your GP what could explain the inconsistency and would raise my eyebrows if they did not ask for a repeat HbA1c just to see if there has been an error somewhere.

I have never had a finger prick in double figures yet, I’m going to order more test strips in case the ones I have are somehow giving an error reading?

I think I would be asking for a retest or perhaps check for anaemia. Your finger pricks do not tally with the result and whilst I appreciate that finger prick tests just give you a moment in time, if you are consistently getting good results, which it sounds like then there may well be a mix up somewhere in the lab or with results being reported.

Thanks, I have been anaemic a few times so will ask for that to be checked too.

My HbA1c was 76 and I was at times getting a reading of 27 and if I get lower than 5.1 I am amazed so for your reading to be higher I think there is some mistake somewhere. Keep us posted.

Hi, Please ask for a repeat Hba1c as everyone else has advised. You don't want to end up in the diagnosis mess I find myself in.

If they wont do it go private for the test, I did some time ago as the GP's were late getting my 3mth Hba1c so I wanted my results quicker.

There are a number of things which can cause elevated HbA1c, anaemia has been mentioned but also Vit B12 deficiency so worth asking for that to be checked. It definitely need some explaining so you need to be insistent for further investigation and emphasise you have been following a low carb diet. A repeat test should be offered with your results being so out of whack with your monitor results.

Thanks everyone I just went to surgery and they have given me the wrong result! Mine is actually 39. I can only think that they have given my result to someone else who actually has level of 82. They could not explain the mix up but were very apologetic.
It’s my cholesterol that has gone up to 7.6 so may have to consider statins. (Benecol doesn’t seem to have done the trick)
They have now agreed to online access to blood test results so hopefully this won’t happen again.
Anyway HbA1c at 39 I’m very happy at this result.

Ah - much better! What a relief for you! Sorry about your cholesterol though. Hopefully that can be improved.

So pleased you have the matter resolved.
As regards the cholesterol, I would be asking for (or checking online) for the breakdown of that result. Ie. HDL, Trigycerides and LDL and doing some online research about ratios because whilst the general guidance is that they like us diabetics under 4, that may not always be practical or healthy for us and understanding the different components of that cholesterol figure and their ratios is more important than the actual number. If I were you I would do some research yourself on cholesterol levels/ratios and risk factors before having the statin discussion. Your low carb way of eating and low HbA1c should go a long way to reducing your risks I believe and since your HbA1c is in the normal range you should not need to fall into line with cholesterol guidance for diabetics in my opinion, because you have pushed your diabetes into remission.

Cholesterol levels are total 7.6, HDL 2.3, triglycerides 1.1, LDL 4.8, cholesterol/HDL ratio 3.3, non HDL cholesterol 5.3
I’m told the Qrisk is low but don’t really understand what they all mean despite trying to research it!

So happy it certainly made no sense . Wish they had mine wrong but I think they are right. Well done you on the diet.

Unbelievable. But at least you have the result you expected.

If you Google LDL, HDL ratios etc you should find what are good ranges for these readings. Personally, I would ignore Qrisk as it may keep the NHS software guys happy with their algorithms but is based on a degree of nonsense.

Thank goodness you checked @Perfect10!

Do you think any of your other results like cholesterol were mixed up too? o_O

https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/cholesterol-ratio using this your ratios don't look bad but i am no expert. Best enter your results and judge for yourself or have a word with GP or DN about your ratios before deciding whether taking statins is really necessary.
