Hi so my GP changed me over from regular Metformin to the prolonged released Metformin but my bloods are climbing.
Regular Metformin was working, but because of a gallbladder attack from Cholecystitis with stones, apparently from rapid weight loss with sudden diet change, my body since then has been having issues with nausea and vomiting, and constipation. The Dr changed my Metformin to see if it would help my bowels, it doesn't feel like things have changed.
Other than less nausea, but I'm worried as all I have read is that Metformin regular is ment to work the same as prolonged released,
:( Anybody else had something similar?

Hello @Crumblebee welcome to the forum.
Yes they should work the same, however many things can and do affect our glucose levels , any illnes, infection, stress, pain to name but a few.

I do have some questions that may help us give you advise.
How did you come by your diabetes diagnosis .
Did the weight loss come before your diagnosis .
You see It is just that I am wondering if you may have another type of diabetes rather than T2 .
What was your last Hb1ac.
If you self test what results are you getting
Sorry for all the questions, you haven’t accidentally signed up to mastermind, honest :D .

Tbh I think you need to contact your Gp or diabetes nurse ASAP

I was diagnosed last year in may. Had all the symptoms thirst, thrush, weird appetite, uncontrollable urine urgency, weight loss, sleeping all the time.
Had been losing weight from early January and continued to lose weight rapidly until September and the weight loss has slowed to almost a complete stop. Weight was around 18 stone and I am now 13 and a half, I changed my diet to dirty keto, but I've not been as strict as my bloods were behaving. Bloods were behaving until December 9th and I went into AnE for gallbladder issues.
Since then have had nausea and problems going to the loo, and my bloods just seem to be getting higher.
I think my first hb1ac was 91 and the last one I had was 47.

I'm just confused as to why changing to modified release would allow my bloods to climb so high as today was 19.5mmol/l from yesterday's 12.0mmol/l

The Metformin isn't powerful enough to do that. It has minimal impact on your BG levels, so even if you were no longer taking any metformin, you wouldn't see that sort of rise... it just doesn't work like that.
It may be that your Keto diet gave your beta cells, which produce insulin in your pancreas, a bit of holiday and that enabled them to cope better for a period of time, but if you have relaxed your diet a bit and/or the beta cells are dying off as happens with Type 1 then they can no longer able to keep pace with the glucose going in your blood and your levels are rising.
The sudden onset symptoms, and you had the 4Ts of Type 1 Thirst, Thinner(weight loss), Toilet (frequent urination) and Tired) suggest you may be misdiagnosed. Go steady on the Easter chocolate and carbs over the weekend and seek medical advice next week or sooner if your levels shoot up to high 20s or above or if you start to feel unwell.

Thanks I'm so confused, I have a Dr appointment on Tuesday so will speak to her about it. Hopefully something bad isn't happening and I've just been eating to much bread... Or something.

Hi . Please don’t panic ok, No type of diabetes is worse than another , it’s just how it’s managed that’s different and T1 often has a very rapid onset. It was the weight loss in your first post that made me sit up and think could it be ...T1 here.
If you suddenly start to feel unwell or your glucose levels go high then please do as Barbara said and seek medical advise quickly.

Urgh! Sounds grim. Levels like that can make you feel pretty rough :(

Keep drinking plenty of water to help your kidneys flush things through, and do have some carbs every so often.

Hope Tuesday goes well

I hope you get some answers Tuesday.
Please let us know how you get on.

Had Dr appointment over the phone and she doesn't think it's the Metformin she thinks something else is going on.
So I have a appointment tomorrow for some samples to be taken and hopefully get some answers.
