I am now 19.0 because I had breakfast and forgot my insulin. I need to eat lunch now because I have an appointment with the psychologist at 1pm. Suggestions?

Urgh!

If that were me (and I could not wait between injecting and eating) I would add perhaps 1u to the expected dose/correction as my corrections seem to be less effective above certain BG levels.

Since you are going in to an appointment you might want to just ride it out and eat/correct as usual.

Hope it comes down smoothly for you.

As you're having lunch now anyway, I'd inject for your lunch + the amount insulin needed to bring you down.

Oh... forgot to say... I'd also use abdomen for the injection as I seem to find that quicker to act.

Do you know your correction factor? That is, the amount in mmol/l your blood sugar will be reduced by 1 unit of fast-acting? If so, I would do a correction now to bring it down to 7 mmol/l and wait for a bit then inject and have lunch normally. Make sure you have some hypo treatments with you for your meeting, and let the psychologist know your situation.

Hope you are OK! 🙂

Hi Natalie

Calculate your normal dose for lunch plus a correction for the 19 to bring you down to at least 8mmol/l.

ie. if your correction doses are 1u to every 2.5mmol, then you'd need to work out 19-8, which is 11, then divide 11 by 2.5, which is 4.4, so you add the 4.4u to your lunch dose and give the nearest whole unit.

If you're likely to be exercising, eg. walking a fair bit, then knock a unit or 2 off and adjust later if needed.

Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks all, I am trying not to panic! Will let you know what happens later. I have taken 6 units correction and am going to have to eat now or I will be late. But I will tell the psychologist just in case!

wow. Looks like the cavalry have come along in force ! :D

Good luck with the appt.🙂

Yep, you're all brilliant, thanks for the quick replies 🙂

Good luck with the BS and your appointment . I hope both go well ( don't worry too much, I'm sure we have all done that before) best wishes Sheena x

Natalie sorry to see your high level, how are you feeling now? hope the appt went well too

Now down to 11.3, not brilliant but its on its way down. One odd thing that I noticed, was that, apart from being high, I felt perfectly normal after breakfast, I had none of the usual symptoms I get after breakfast like feeling confused, dizzy, sweaty, disorientated and breathless. It just makes me wonder ... something to ask the nurse on Thursday I think

I'd say 11.3 is pretty good going considering you had to estimate your correction and also you had some stress about the meeting 🙂 I would also have expected to feel pretty rotten at your earlier levels too though!

Northerner - what I meant was that I usually feel rotten and this morning I didn't!! I feel rotten now though!

Maybe you're an inverse type 1. 😱

Glad it came down to near normal levels.🙂
