I know I shouldn't have, but after a really good day yesterday, I indulged in a chocolate Feast lolly last night! I know, I know! Been really stressed about uni work, work etc! I woke at 5 am with a headache (mind whirring with study/work etc). Tested bg. 6.4. Ate a low fat yogurt and berries, cup of tea (usually works) and nodded off again til 8.30 am. Tested. 6.6. Ate a handful of strawberries. Went on an errand. Tested 2 hours later. Stil 6.6! Is this:

a) payback for the lolly?
b) because I went back to sleep?
c) a combination of all 3?

To get my bg down, should I have eaten again after I got up the 2nd time and did going back to sleep shut my pancreas down again?

Am off for a brisk walk now to see if that works, but any ideas/thoughts would be gratefully received! Thankyou🙂 Katiex

Hi katie.

I would put the headache at 5am more down to the stressing and maybe a restless night (hence waking at 5am?).

The lolly probably isn't doing you any favours but I doubt it's causing you big problems this far on.

I would probably have just gone back to sleep but hard for me to say. IMHO 6.6 isn't too bad on waking and I suspect the walk will be the best thing if you're worrying about it.🙂

Thanks Rob. Been for a walk and tested. 5.7 which is much better!🙂 Would going back to sleep again after eating the yogurt and berries stop my pancreas from kicking in? Would I have been better not to have eaten anything, just gone back to sleep then eaten when I woke? Normally eating a low carb breakfast brings my bg down within a couple of hours, but maybe because I went back to sleep, that's why it didn't:confused: Off to do some more of my dissertation now! Have delayed it long enough! Katie

Tbh katie, I don't know.

Pancreatic activity is something I don't have to worry about thankfully! :D

I would imagine it's more your liver that would vary the amount of glucose being secreted into your bloodstream. If you're tired and go back to sleep after a snack, I would imagine it stays fairly quiet.

Good luck with your dissertation.🙂

I would LOVE to have consistent values of 6.6! Is this really considered high? I thought the normal range was 4-7....?

I think the worry is when it takes a sudden jump - Katieb is used to seeing waking levels in the 4s these days. Whilst the number itself is OK, it's a worry if it suddenly goes 30% higher without explanation.

It depends on the person 😉

From what I've read the, normal glucose level for a non-diabetic is supposed to be around 4 mmol/L - so in those terms a "6" is high.

However, for an insulin user who is trying to balance there injected insulin I would image that hitting 4 mmol/L exactly day after day is a bit like hitting a balloon with a dart when the balloon is attached to a car driving down the road. That's why I suspect there is a "normal range" given.

I suspect Katie won't really know if not eating would have been better until she duplicates the occurrence and tests without eating :D

Prediabetic

Sorry Pigeon. Need to explain that I am not officially a diabetic (impaired glucose tolerance) ie prediabetic in some people's terms. However...I think I probably am diabetic (I think I just cross the border line and even if I am not, it's best to live my life as if I am!) and as I am not on any kind of medication, a (fasting) reading of above 6 would place me in 'abnormal' range although not diabetic levels. My GP considers a reading over 5.9 as a high enough reading to warrant further investigation. A fasting reading over 7 is a diabetic level. I am trying really hard to keep my bg level as near normal as possible. For me, a reading of around 6.2 is normal, over 6.2 is high and below 6 is great! You can see why I am concerned at a reading of 6.6 as a fasting level for me. I know I am rambling, but hope I am making sense! Anyway, am working hard to slow down the progression as I know that diabetes is a progressive disease. It's important to point out though that I don't underedstimate the issues of those who deal with the condition day to day. I am not complacent about what I am dealing with and very much value the input of those 'in the know'! Hope this helps to explain and thanks to all for your input! By the way, have done loads on my Uni work today and feel like I may sleep well tonight! LOL!🙂 Katie

Well you do have to remember than stress usually increases BG so all in all, I don't think you fared all that badly really esp considering the lolly!

It would be most unnatural not to say 'hang it - I'm having it anyway' occasionally.

Can't add much to what others have said. I doubt the jump (although still with in what is considered acceptable) is down to the lolly.

If you have been under stress this could cause the head ache and the numbers being higher than you're used to.

I hope you feel better.
