I have an underactive thyroid that has been undertreated which has led to weight gain and a general feeling of feeling blurgh, but not unwell.
I have very recently also been told that I have type 2 diabetes .....
Maybe i am just in denial (or shock) at this news but would like to try and understand a bit more .
(Awaiting to see nurse )

I have had none of the 'normal' symptoms associated with TTD apart from tiredness , but I put this down to thyroid issues.

I just have this gut instinct (or maybe it is denial)
that maybe some how they are jumping the gun a bit .

I had a blood test in sept last year (for my thyroid) the HB1 Test show a level of 51
Was told to repeat test in Dec the level came down to 45 (no further action )

Blood test in March showed level of 51
Repeat 2 weeks later still 51.
Both of these tests were taken late afternoon
Does the time of day for testing make a difference ??

Just feel very overwhelmed .

Welcome @NK65 🙂 The time of day makes no difference for an HbA1C test as it basically gives an idea of your blood sugar over the last 3 months. An HbA1C of 51 puts you just in the diabetes zone, but hopefully you can improve this quite easily.

No the time of day makes no difference as the HbA1C test is the average blood glucose level over the previous 3 months. The level of 51 mmol/mol gives you a diagnosis of diabetes but you are only on the start of the ladder (48 and over is the cut off). 45mmol/mol would have put you at prediabetic and really that should be taken as a warning sign to take some action.
Some changes to your dietary regime should bring your level down, so reducing your intake of carbohydrates by cutting out some things like cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks and reducing portions of other high carb foods like potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, cereals and tropical fruits.

I eat a varied diet , occasional alcoholic drink .
I dont have sugar in hot drinks , but i do use sweeteners.
These are pictures of my typical meals , I do tend to eat less fruit during the colder months .
The beans and bread are pushing towards being rather high carb, one or the other would be better, but your other meals look OK, just be careful with the portion size of rice.
The book or app Carbs and Cals may help you with working out the carbs in your meals. There are other apps people use free or otherwise.
Spirits with diet mixers and dry wines are the lowest carbs, there do seem to be some low carb beers now but normal beers can be pretty high carb.

Ah well, engage your mine sweeper and learn how to manage your diet. Have you been advised to restrict your intake of carbohydrate, increase exercise and taught how to self monitor your blood glucose day to day to ensure your diet is OK? Have you been prescribed any medication, or what?
 
If you would like to say a bit about your diagnosis, what was your HbA1C and do you have weight to lose as that will help people to give appropriate comments. What would you like help with?

I’ve merged your welcome threads together to save you having to repeat details in different places 🙂

The level for a diagnosis with T2 is 48mmol/L, so you are relatively close to the edge, which suggests that your metabolism is just beginning to struggle with your menu, rather than beginning to flag substantially.

It may be that some relatively modest tweaks to your meals might be enough to put your BG levels back into range. Reducing portion sizes of starchy carbohydrates along with cutting right back on obvious things like sweets, biscuits, crisps, cake etc would be a good start. Be a bit careful of fruit too - full of vitamins etc, but some types can add quite substantially to daily carb intake if eaten freely. Berries are usually kindest on the BG, with more tropical varieties like bananas, mango pineapple etc often being trickiest. Everyone is very individual though, so it’s a question of finding out your own tolerances to different things 🙂
