Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi my name is Tracey. I'm 44 years old and have had Type 2 Diabetes since 2009. My diabetes is not well controlled. I have a Libre 2 sensor. I have gone down with Covid since Sunday and my Blood sugars are ranging from 20 to above 33. Im currently drinking lots and weeing loads and it's affecting my physical and mental health. I just want to cry

Hi
I think if your levels are that high
it’s unsurprising your drinking & weeing loads

are you on any meds ?
do you have a DSN you can call ?
if not I think TBH you should phone 111

take care

Yes on insulin 4 times a day plus mentoring. Have DSN who is ringing me again tomorrow. It will properly be up the insulin again as not much else they can do. I really don't like high blood sugars and covid

How are you now Tracey, I hope increasing your insulin has improved your blood glucose level. Don't hesitate to call your DSN if you need more help.

Hi my blood sugar has been HI all day. Just spoke to SDN and Drs. Keystones ok so that appears to be my saving grace. If no improvement at weekend need to ring out of hours and try different injecting site

So sorry to hear you have Covid and are battling such high levels. I can understand that being scary, especially if they are off the scale "HI"

Do keep checking for ketones when your levels are that high as they could develop even if you don't have any now.
What are you eating and probably more importantly drinking?
Have they increased your insulin doses?
Which insulins are you on and what sort of doses are you using and where do you normally inject?
Hope they start coming down soon.

Hi I will keep checking keystones. Appetite is poor but trying to eat regularly. Drinking plenty. On Toujeo double strength of 88 units in morning. Also Nova rapid at breakfast at 40 units and the same at lunchtime. Then tea im currently taking extra units so taking 60

Ok, so those insulin doses suggest that you are most likely Type 2 with insulin resistance rather than a possible misdiagnosed Type 1..... With having such very high BG levels that was something that was troubling me.

What sort of things you are drinking was more my question than how much. I was just concerned that you might be drinking lots of something containing carbs like fruit juice or milk or normal squash which might be counteracting the insulin you are taking if you are drinking lots and therefore not getting a reduction in BG levels, but just putting more sugar in as your body is trying to wee it out. It is difficult to know how much people understand about diabetes as new members and if you were drinking fruit juice etc, which can be a temptation, it would be making your levels much worse.

I appreciate you said you are Type 2 in your opening post but that is not necessarily a guarantee that people are what they have been diagnosed. It is sadly not uncommon for people to be misdiagnosed as Type 2 when they are actually Type 1. This often has a slow onset in more mature adults and may initially appear to be Type 2 or medical professionals just assume you must be Type 2 if you develop diabetes later in life because they believe that only children get Type 1.

I wasn't meaning to confuse you but I rarely take a diagnosis at face value here on the forum as it is largely guesswork on the part of the medical profession in many cases and there are plenty of us whose initial diagnosis of Type 2 was wrong. In your case with those higher doses of insulin then I am reassured that your diagnosis is probably correct which means that you are probably not at serious risk of Diabetic KetoAcidosis like you would be with Type 1 at those levels.

Good to hear that you are drinking mostly water as that should help. Hope the increased insulin starts to reduce those levels and the Covid passes soon.

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time with your high glucose levels, and Covid :(

Has your nurse suggested an increase to your usual doses to account for the effects of the illness? Do you have ‘sick day rules’ you can use?

With the levels you are getting it doesn’t seem like you are taking enough insulin.

Thank you. Although I have been diabetic since 2009 I still feel like I dont really have a clue about the condition. I'm trying to find out as much as I can to keep myself informed as I'm finding information hard to get from diabetic team

There are quite a few people who are Type 2 on various insulin regimes so if you have any specific questions then ask away. But there are also some very experienced Type 1 folk who are very familiar with managing their insulin and I'm sure some of the issues you have will be the same as they encounter.
