Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello

I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 about three weeks ago after going through a set of investigations with my Doctor as a result of persistent UTI's. A finger prick test at the surgery put me at 26mmol/l and subsequent blood tests to lab came back with a result of 119. I was put on 2x500 Metaformin a day which was increased to 4x500 in the last week.

Currently feeling a lot better. As I had been feeling extremley weird for a while. My morning bloods are around 11mmol/l and this evening a few minutes ago after dinner and taking meds 8.9mmol/l

The hardest thing for me so far was learning about diet and nutrition. During my first week on the lower dosage I was under the (extremely stupid) idea I could eat whatever I liked, and my BG was absolutely horrific. There I was sitting on the sofa in front of the TV eating cherry pie and chocolate ice cream wondering why I was feeling woozy!

Now I am better informed but still have a great deal to learn. Still working towards lowering my readings. Decided to sign up after reading the forum and seeing how helpful and supportive everyone was.

Glad to be here, sorry for the long post.

hi @MattM - sorry, but I had a little laugh at the cherry pic and ice cream - if only we could eat that all the time eh? I wish!

Glad you are getting on with things and your readings are improving. There's lots of great info in here on diet, reducing carbs etc and you will soon get the hang of things.

A lot of us record our morning readings in this thread - you might want to join in

Just shout if you have any questions.

Good luck

Oh God - Cherry pie with choc ice cream is an absolute No No - any fool knows it should always be vanilla with cherry pie. :D

We all had a lot to learn to begin with, so just make your mind up if you haven't already, to anything you don't know as much as you'd like to about, ask, ask ask!

have yo ventured into the learning Zone on here yet? - you should find it very helpful, lots of info in there for the newly diagnosed and of course reminders for those of us who've had D for ages. Nobody will ever know everything!

Oh I like almond ice cream with cherries - I pulverise the fruit and add it to gelatine to make a jelly, then whip ground almonds and almond essence into real custard and freeze it. It should last two days - but it doesn't and I gaze sadly at the empty bowls before washing them and putting them away for next week.

Welcome to the forum @MattM

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad that your diabetes has now been picked up and that you are starting to get your head round things. I had such a sweet tooth at the start but now find puds have lost their attraction. There is lot to learn at the start but it will get easier, and you will find out what suits you.

There is lots of experience to tap into on here, and plenty of useful info if you read around the forum. We are all different so it is a case of working out what works for you. However a knowledge of Carbs is useful for all of us. All this carbs we eat will end up as glucose once inside us, so it can be useful to know how many your are eating, or what foods are loaded with these. Then you can start to make changes to bring those numbers down.

Whatever questions arise, just ask. Nothing is considered silly on here, so just fire away.
