Good morning! I am the parent of a 6 year old child with type 1. Our daughter got diagnosed February 2020 and I have looked at many posts on this forum for advice during the past year but thought today I would join in the hope of speaking to other parents in the same position. Also I now feel that I would be able to offer some advice and support to others who find themselves in the same situation. Thank you

Hi @parent06! Welcome to the forum properly!

It can't have been easy having a newly-diagnosed 6 year old at just before lockdown! How is your daughter coping now? I wasn't quite that young when I was diagnosed (I was 9) but I know a few youngsters with T1 of a similar age.

And I'm sure you're advice and experience will be welcomed by all! Please feel free to share it with us!

Hi and welcome from me too.

Not a parent myself and cannot begin to imagine the challenge it must be to manage the levels of a young child. It is hard enough managing my own and I at least know how I am feeling in myself, but trying to judge that as a third party and having all that extra responsibility must be so daunting, so it is really good of you to come and offer your experience and support to others who are in the position you were last year.
I hope your daughter is doing well now. Is she on MDI or a pump? Which insulin(s) is she using and how do you find them?

Hi, thank you both for replying .
I can honestly say getting our daughters diagnosis at the age of 5 last year made our world fall apart. Coupled with lockdowns has made the last year incredibly hard. BUT as a family together we have worked through this time and our daughter now is doing amazingly well! She is currently on 4 MDI - Fisap and Levimer -and managing this really well. Her school have been absolutely amazing in managing her condition and have been very supportive to me also. Looking back I never would have believed my daughter would be where she is at the moment!
If anyone is in a similar situation and would like to speak to me, I am here . I know how incredibly hard it can be being a parent of a young child. Take care

Welcome to the forum @parent06
Congratulations to you, your daughter and all the family for managing the change to a new normal life that you have had to make through lockdown. Really pleased that you have joined the forum and look forward to hearing more from you.

Ah that is so great to hear @parent06

Well done to you both! And congratulations on your ‘delurking’ 🙂

We have a few experienced parents of older children with diabetes such as @Bronco Billy @Thebearcametoo @Sally71 and @stephknits whose brains you can pick if you have any EHHH??!? moments - and those will come! They still do to me 30 years in!

Welcome from me too. Glad you decided to post after lurking! I was a lurker too and was glad when I finally took the plunge. As Mike says, my type 1 is much older at 17, still my baby though!

Hi and welcome. I’m glad you’re getting the hang of it all and feeling able to support others. The school sound fabulous.

Yes it makes so much difference when you have a supportive school! We’ve met good teachers, not so good teachers, one or two people who refused to listen at all, heard some real horror stories far worse than anything we’ve experienced and now have her at an absolutely fab secondary school who really look after her. She’s 14 now but was 6 at diagnosis so I know what fun it is!! She says she can’t remember actually being able to sit down and just eat food without having to do sums and insulin doses! Welcome to the forum 🙂

Thank you everyone! You are all so kind ! I think having such a supportive school makes such a difference. In the very initial days after diagnosis we thought of home schooling as I just couldn’t see how our daughter would be ok at school but she is .
