Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone. I am hoping that this support group will help me control type 2 diabetes. I am not a typical candidate for type 2 as I am not overweight and I keep reasonably fit(well I think I do). I am 60 and going to retire soon. I hope having more time to prepare and cook meals will help me control my sugar levels. I guess I need to change my diet fairly drastically. But I do love carbs.....

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm sure that the forum will help you understand and eventually, manage your type 2 diabetes. There is lots of wonderful information on the forum about diets. If there are any questions, in particular, ask away.

Be honest - nobody loves ALL carbs! How particularly fond of cucumber are you? Or those in cabbage? Most starchy carb is fairly tasteless on its own - take pasta for instance, nobody eats it plain boiled - it relies on the sauce you put with it to make it palatable doesn't it? And who ever said you can't have any of it? the key is to cut down on the high carb stuff, until you get to the level your own body can tolerate and doesn't make your blood glucose soar into the stratosphere pdq.

As to how much your own body can tolerate sensibly - this is individual specifically to you and nobody else - so it's a matter for experimentation to see how much at a time of what, is OK or not.

I found it’s trial and error, with a lot of errors I learnt a lot. Whatever works for me can work most times but not every one, I just have to accept that. For example spaghetti sends my BS so high it gets vertigo but I can eat a reasonable amount of fussily stay below 9.
Develop your confidence in managing it and don’t beat yourself up on the days it seems to wrong - accept it will happen!

Welcome to the forum @Maily

Glad you have found us. 🙂

Ask away with any questions - there ade lots of wise and experienced heads here, with literally centuries of lived diabetes experience and many many unique and individual approaches to diabetes management.

We can help you find your own way, and suggest some hints and tips, or strategies for improving your blood glucose management 🙂

You might consider writing a food diary for a week or two, and totting up the amount of all carbohydrates (not just ‘sugars’) in your various meals and snacks to give you an idea of your general ntake and help identify some ‘easy wins’ in terms of reducing BG fluctuation.

Then ask members for their hints and tips based on what you discover.

Hi and welcome from me too.

I loved carbs both in the form of sugar and bread, pasta and potatoes, pre-diagnosis. I gave up all the sweet stuff straight away and I haven't had any bread or pasta for nearly a year now and I have a couple of small potatoes maybe once a week/fortnight and amazingly, I just don't miss them. What is mind blowing is that since cutting them out of my diet and eating less, I also feel less hungry. Those carbs were making me eat far more than I needed to. Now I usually just have 2 meals a day and don't feel hungry in between. Whilst I really enjoy my food now, it is very different to to the way I was eating and takes a bit of getting your head around but it is quite liberating not having that gnawing need for carbs anymore. Eating more fat has been the key to making it sustainable and enjoyable and keeping weight stable once normal BMI was attained.... since you mention you don't have much/any to lose.
