hi all just been diagnosed (2 weeks ago).ithought having luekemia was bad enough but this is frying my brain,come totally out of the blue.my hba1c reading was 105! .which is high im told.been put on metformin 2x500 and a retest in 3 months.so far i have cut out biscuits,cakes ect.switched to seeded bread.Any more tips mote than welcome because all i got from the nurse was how bad it all is and what drugs i may be given.thanks
 
Dr Google says an increase in blood glucose levels is common. Welcome aboard btw, sorry you had to join such a sucky club.
 
Welcome to the forum @andyj . Sorry to hear about your diagnosis as well as your leukaemia.

The increased glucose levels in your blood come from any carbohydrates that you eat. All of them get converted into glucose once inside you. With T2 your body is not making enough insulin to match the glucose in your blood stream. The meds they have given you will help your body to process the glucose.

You have already started to make changes to your diet. It is useful to know how many carbohydrates you are eating at each meal, so many find it useful to keep a food diary. This information will help you, and your HCP, to make decisions about changes that can help you. You could then reduce your carbs by making swaps and/or reducing portion sizes in meals. A useful rule of thumb I use when choosing veg is that Things grown
  • Below the ground are high in carbs (potatoes, parsnips, ...)
  • Above the ground are medium carbs (peas, beans, ...)
  • On the ground they are low carb ( lettuce, celery, ..)
