Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello. My Name is Paul. I'm 45 years old. Diagnosed with Type 2 in January. My HBa1c was over 100 but was down to 70 a few weeks ago. I'm currently injecting insulin twice a day with the daily mmol/L numbers generally staying between 5 & 10. I've had Psoriatic Arthritis for over 20 years so have been used to taking meds long term. Not massively unfit or obese (BMI of around 27) but struggle to do as much exercise as I should due to the pain its causes. Feeling a bit low today as I've just had the eye test result back saying that I have background retinopathy. Not panicking about it too much but just trying to think about how to manage everything in the longer term. I'm hoping to come off the insulin sooner rather than later and to move on to Metformin. Has anyone done this previously? Any advice is welcome. I will try to log in and contribute but I have 3 kids and a busy life so we'll see...

Welcome to the forum @paulyw1974

Well done on the progress you have made so far!

If your arthritis is related to psoriasis, so you are already on the autoimmune bandwagon - have you already been checked for antibodies and cPeptide to check if your diabetes might be LADA (slow onset T1 that develops in adulthood)?

Hi Mike. Thanks for your reply. It took them a number of weeks to diagnose type 2. I'd already started the insulin before it was confirmed but I'm assuming they did check for those markers. I'll try to remember to ask next time I talk to my nurse. The arthritis is related to my psoriasis but I have that condition nicely under control. For now I'm changing my diet and looking to see where that leads.. Thanks again for you reply.

Welcome to the forum Paul.

Welcome to the forum @paulyw1974

You have already been given lots of info. As others have said it would be worth checking that they looked for the markers for LADA. It is often missed as many HCPs assume that anyone over 40 must be T2.

I've just spoken to my healthcare nurse and they did test for LADA but the result was negative so it does look like it's definitely Type 2. Not sure if its good news as such but probably better than Type 1. Thanks again for the replies.

My first test showed background retinopathy, the second one was normal and it has stayed that way. Having lower BG enables things to sort themselves out, even after quite long term high levels.
My Hba1c at diagnosis was 91, after 6 months, 41.

Hi Drummer. Thanks for that. Its good know changes can make things better. I'm trying to make realistic changes to see how that goes. Cutting out bread etc. I'm feeling better today, had a good night sleep and nice low (5.4) reading this morning. Thanks again for the positive input. Paul

Hello @paulyw1974 and welcome from me as well.
Good to know that you are feeling better, and that is certainly a very good morning reading.
It is well worth taking changes steadily and seeing what works for you, to get a good solution that is sustainable for the long term.
Please keep posting and let us know how things are going, and we will always try to answer any questions.
