Then you are in good company and can join a lot of us on here who were also diagnosed as adults.
Welcome to the forum. I have learnt most of what I know about my management from others on here, so I am pleased that you have found us.

There is a lot to take in at the start, and the best analogy I have been given is that it is like learning to drive. It all seems so complicated at the start but then just becomes automatic. So be patient with yourself and work with your Diabetes Specialist Nurse as they work with you to get your levels in check and sort out correct doses of insulin for you.

Just to help us give appropriate advice, can you tell us how you came to be diagnosed, and which insulins you have been put on?

.... also there any specific questions that you have at present, or is it just general advice that you are after. In here no questions are considered silly. Just ask.

Hi and welcome from me too.... another late one to the party.... diagnosed last year the day after my 55th birthday.
This forum has been a life and sanity saver for me in getting to grips with this over the past year, I hope you find it equally beneficial.

Would you like to tell us a bit more about your diabetes .... like how you came to be diagnosed, which insulins you are on and how you are managing and what you are finding most difficult? It is all very overwhelming at first but it does get better and there have been positives to come out of my diagnosis.... like adopting a healthier diet and lifestyle and interestingly, I no longer get migraines and can even drink wine now which was one of my main triggers. Of course the diabetes is a pain in the rear but it is what it is and we manage it the best we can and it definitely gets easier with practice.

Welcome from another late developer

Welcome to the forum @Spook

A diagnosis with diabetes can be a big shock at any age - and it isn’t widely appreciated (even by Drs!) that half of all people with T1 are diagnosed in adulthood.

Having the support of peers and people affected by diabetes who instinctively ‘get it’ can be a great help.

Fire away with any questions, confusions, annoyances or just ask for practical tips - lots of experienced, friendly folks here to give you ideas and suggestions.

Good morning (just about) @Spooks, it is often an illness that makes the final beta cells just throw their hands up in the air and give in. You have certainly been through the mill.

Usually (and I know nothing is usual at the moment) with a T1 diagnosis in hospital you have access to a DSN, al be it via an email contact, but they should certainly be able to help with adjusting you doses of the background insulin (Humalin) which will deal with the glucose your body is trickling out to keep you ticking over, and your quick acting insulin (Novorapid) which will deal with the glucose that comes from the carbohydrates that you eat. Have you been given any contact details?

How are you coping day to day at present?

Hello and welcome to the forum @Spook 🙂

Sorry about that - but you do meet such lovely people when you join this club, even though nobody in it wanted to join it! LOL

Is it Humulin I you are on?

Bloomin heck! That must have been a bit traumatic!

If you are looking for advice on snacks. low carb snacks mean that you don't have to factor in insulin doses, so things like a handful of nuts (brazils, walnuts and hazelnuts are lowest carb), a chunk of your favourite cheese, a cooked sausage or salami, a boiled egg with mayonnaise, a chicken drumstick, some veggie sticks with dips, olives if you like them, or a square of dark 70% + cocoa chocolate. I have it with a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter to bulk it out and give it some extra flavour and texture. A dollop or two of creamy natural Greek yoghurt with a few chopped nuts and seeds mixed in and maybe half a dozen blueberries or raspberries or some stewed rhubarb with a bit of sweetener since it is just coming into season. If I am feeling really naughty, I have a packet of pork scratchings. Aldi do some Gluten free Nut Bars which are just 5.9g carbs per bar and come in a 4 bar pack and are really satisfying for a sweet treat. Nature Valley protein bars are just under 10g carbs per bar so getting on for needing a unit of insulin. If you are at the low end of your range then you can usually get away with one without a bolus injection.
Hope that gives you some ideas.
