Hi and welcome from me too.
Would you like to tell us a bit more about your diabetes and what brings you to the forum...ie. community support, a search for knowledge, to share your story and inspire others etc.
Hopefully we will get to know you better soon. Please feel free to share as much or as little information with us as you are comfortable with. There are some really knowledgeable and experience members here who know what it is like to live with diabetes and we are a friendly bunch so I hope you enjoy being part of this great community.

PS Lovely to see a photo of happy smiling faces to take our minds off other more worrying matters. You just can't help but smile when you see such a photo.

HIYA @The Black Vegan - welcome to the forum. Loads of info on here to get through (not all diabetic related either!) How you coping with yours?

hi Tee G

Thanks for the welcome!

I've managed to get off yaltformin - so not on meds, at the moment. I'm controlling it using by sticking to a plant based diet and will be re-tested in the next month to see how I'm getting on. A bit nervous about the next blood test if I'm honest!

Hi rebrascora,

Thanks for the welcome too.
So, I was not coping very well at the beginning of last year with any kind of stress. I was losing my temper really quickly and in April, decided to go to the doctor. I had been feeling fatigued for years, but by this time, it was seriously affecting my family time. I was wiped every evening, especially after work. The blood test came back and my doctor was really concerned, so had another one and it was the same.I was immediately prescribed metformin.
That helped but I didn't get on with the lactose - so switched to yaltformin. Then I finally started learning about how to improve my diet. I'd got it all wrong, so wasn't doing myself any favours. It's not perfect now, but vastly improved.

I've joined the forum for a number of reasons; community support, a search for knowledge, to share my story and inspire others, to grow my new online venture in the gig economy, to find out what people need and if there is anything I can do to provide them with that's of value.

Thanks for feedback about the pic - I thought it was a nice way to say "hi" 🙂

Hi again.

Pleased you have managed to come off the Yaltformin. Do you know what your original HbA1c was?

I imagine being vegan and diabetic will make your diet quite challenging.

I am guessing from your comment to TeeG that you don't self monitor your BG levels. Many Type 2 diabetics on the forum find that self funding a BG meter is a very valuable tool in helping them tailor their diet to their individual tastes and tolerance for carbs as our response to food can be quite individual due to differences in metabolism, gut biome etc. Not sure I would want to wait until my next blood test at the docs to find out if I was getting it right or not, but then I am Type 1 so testing multiple times a day is an integral part of my management and I am provided with a BG meter and strips on prescription.

I thought Yaltformin was a brand of Metformin.

It is but I believe the coating is different. This may be why some people get on better with certain brands of Metformin than others. It is not so much the active agent as the binding components or tablet coating.

Are you trying to sell something?

@rebrascora - my HbA1c reading was 58. I chose the plant based option 7 months after being diagnosed. It was difficult to begin with, hunger would hit me sohard, but now I've adapted how often and what I eat. I've got a BG meter, but I hate using it. Bit of an issue with needles :D...

Are you trying to sell something?

@grovesy - I'm only selling me! Apparently we're always selling stuff, according to a book I've seen.. I'm moving away from the traditional 9-5 career that I'm in, that doesn't truly satisfy me, to something far more interesting that could potentially replace my salary. If I can achieve that, then I'll be able to put more energy into managing my life well and experience it in the way that I dreamt when I was much younger.

Howdy BV!

Good luck with the next HbA1c.

I'm mainly plant based these days, though still do a little fish and chicken. Chia seeds, soy milk, loads of nuts, avocado, berries, melon, veggies, leaves, a little pumpernickel (sorry - just going through my panic-buy list 🙂

I like raw and I don't mind eating the same thing most days - not for everybody but works really well for me - for BG, BP and cholesterol.

All the best.

Howdy to you too!

Thanks.. this is a really friendly place! 🙂 It's taken me the best part of a year to just get on with it and jump in. Only regret I have is not joining sooner. I was trying to work out what to do for months and didn't think it would be any use joining a forum. How wrong was I!?

Hi again (im going to copy in @Riccy987 - & @TCP36C so they pick up this thread) - I believe they are vegan too? Maybe you two can swap ideas/support. We have a food/carb queries list on here, not sure if you have made your way to it yet, to have a look around - There's a lot to take in when you first join a site like this. So I gave them a little heads up - hope they log on soon for you - all the best.

Very wrong The Black Vegan! A warm welcome to our friendly supportive forum ~ glad you found us. There's lots of experienced and knowledgeable folk here willing to accompany you on your Diabetes journey.

Living with the condition Diabetes doesn't mean you have to give up all your favourite foods. Carborhydrates from healthy foods boost nutrition and supply essential fuel for your brain & body.

Counting Carbs is integral to managing your Diabetes coz your Carb choices; portion sizes; and meal timing directly impact your blood glucose levels (bgls)

If you havent already bought the following book then I'd recommend you grab yourself a copy of CARB & CALS COUNTER from diabetes.org.uk

This book provides the tools you need to best manage your diet & Diabetes. It also contains over 1700 photos of a wide range of popular food and drink items. The Carborhydrate ~ Calorie ~ Protein ~ fat ~ saturated fat ~ and fibre values are clearly displayed in colour coded circles below each photo.

You'll also find the following link helpful:~

*Then scroll down to Type 2.

Good luck and please do stay in touch as to your progress. Need to know anything? Then just ask🙂
Best wishes

@Wirralass - too helpful! :D I love this place... I feel like I've hit the jackpot (and I don't mean the lottery hehe)..
I've written a plant based diet book too.. it's in the final stages, but I'm not going to try promoting it here.
