Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi Just joined so will be trying to find my way around the site. Brief info about myself. I have very recently become a type 2 diabetes ( evidently just in ) and at the moment not on any medication. Obviously I have been going round in circles for a while but just beginning to settle down. I am sure belonging here i will glean a lot more information and help. I do not tend to go online a great deal so please excuse me if I am asked a question but take a while to get back to you. Information is a great thing so I am slow in what I look for and absorb what I read. One of my interest on the site is the free cookbooks which I am sure will be of great help but not able to download as It will not accept my password so some guidance would be helpful. Sorry if I am out of place here but I will learn.
Thanks

Hi and welcome @Chalkie - We are very pleased to have you here. and yes, you take your time getting used to the site. Its no problem if you dont respond straight away, someone will always be around to pick up the thread.

You may like to read this ... https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/maggie-daveys-letter-to-newly-diagnosed-type-2s.61307/ its from the forum and very helpful for the newly diagnosed.

Ask any questions you like. Nothing it out of bounds. We have all been new to this and its a confusing time, especially when there is so much reading to get through. Just take your time, pull up a chair and make a cup of tea (no sugar through! 😉) and enjoy!🙂

Hello @Chalkie, so good that you have joined the forum.
It does take a while to adjust to living with Type 2 diabetes, but there is plenty of support and help here from many of us who will try and help

We are all different though and there is no ‘one size fits all’ and you need to find what is right for you.
For me, a new way of eating, and increased exercise has worked .
There are several options on what food plan to follow, but most of us find we need to cut down on the carbs.

As well as cutting out all the sugary things, and I cut down on the carbs particularly the ‘white’ ones (bread and flour, rice, pasta, etc ) and mainly eat fresh fish and poultry, yoghurts, nuts and some cheese, and have learned to love vegetables (although that took a while!). I also try to avoid too much processed food, and to include plenty of fibre some from the veg, plus seeds and pulses. I only have one portion of fruit a day, usually berries.

As @Tee G suggests Maggie Davey's letter, gives information on how this lady approached the problem.
I'm not sure which books you were trying to access, but let us know and we will try and sort out a link.
A good link on this site is Recipes

Hope it goes well for you, and come back and ask questions whenever the time is right for you.

Hi Toucan Your message as already help me in regards in what one should eat and not eat as it has confirmed that what I have been doing I am on the right course. I have yet to read Maggie's Davey's letter but will get round to it. The main book I was trying to download is Download the 365 Recipe Cookbook which I found on this site https://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-cookbook.html. First time I went to it asked me to sign in (not reconized) second wasto register. Perhaps you can com up with a solution. Thanks

Hello again @Chalkie
Good to know that you are already going in a good direction with the eating.

I will copy in @Josh DUK to ask if he can offer any advice on downloading the DUK Cookbook.
There are some good recipes in this, but for me many of them use more carbs than I can generally cope with, so you may wish to adjust them a bit.

One of the things that many of us on the forum do, is to get ourselves a glucose monitor so that we can measure the effect that different foods have on our glucose levels. If you would like to know more about this, let me know and I will send a link to more information.

Best wishes

That isn’t Diabetes UK, that is diabetes.co.uk - a company which runs a diabetes community. It‘s an easy mistake to make (and one the company seems happy to allow to be made!)

Welcome to the forum @Chalkie - look forward to hearing more of your story.

If you’d like some free information from Diabetes UK, you can check out the Enjoy Food section https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food

Or you could consider registering an account with the Diabetes UK ‘Learning Zone’ https://learningzone.diabetes.org.uk/

Hi once again you have answered a question I had in the beginning - How do you know how you are doing if you do not measure it in some way. On a recent visit to my GP I ask that question and he said I do not have to do this at this level. Anyway I would be grateful for the monitor link and any further information that can be given. When I did look online at them there are hundreds and I also read a warning to be careful as some do not work as well as they should.
Also thanks for passing on the information regarding the book. Obviously I did get mixed up between the two but will decide whether to register with the other or not. I have thought of going to a decent book shop to have a brows to see what is out there.
Please let me know if I am making my replies too long as I remember something in the rules.
Thanks

Hi thank you for the information regarding the book I was after. Obviously a easy mix up but did drive me mad at the time. I will get round to visiting your links but as you know there is a lot of information out there to get through. Grateful for taking the time to reply.
Thanks

Hello again @Chalkie
Regarding monitors SD Gluco Navii is one of the cheaper options that many people on the forum use.
There is further information on testing on this link test-review-adjust
.... and no, your replies are not too long, many are much longer!

Best wishes

Hi Update on your last post. I have ordered the monitor you recommended and waiting for it to arrive. I wonder if you have any recommendations and general opinion from others regarding treadmills. Overall my wife and I have always loved walking and when were a bit younger thought nothing of walking and used to do around 6 mile round trip (not every day). We still do walking when we can but not quite so far. I try to do a reasonably fast walk round my area everyday weather permitting. So back to treadmills I have read about them but not sure which is best motorised one or manual. This would enable me ( and the wife) to continue to exerciser when the weather is poor. We were leaning towards a manual one.
Thanks

Hi Chalkie,
Most of us have found that what we eat and when (Low Carb way Of eating, not snacking etc). is much more important than how uch exercise we take.
I just do the same 30min brisk walk that I did before I was diagnosed as T2D.
I'm a member of both forums, this one and the diabetes.co.uk one. This one has nicer Moderators, but the other one is much larger since it's very international.
There are great members (experts in their own form of diabetes) in both forums.

Hello again Chalkie, good to know that you have ordered the monitor, and hope you find it helpful.

Sorry, I haven't any knowledge about treadmills. I do really enjoy walking though, and in the fresh air is always best if you can, even in the rain can be quite nice sometimes if you put on some waterproofs. If I can't get out, I generally run up and down the stairs a few times, but it is a bit boring!

I have found a trampoline to be quite handy - I am sure it helped with tightening up the muscles behind what had become quite a significant 'bay window' at my waist, and also on the few occasions when constipation loomed the bouncing got things moving nicely. I have a large one in the garden - being on the South coast I enjoy the good weather when we get it, but have been thinking of getting a small indoor one for the weeks of wet and cold we have had this year.

Hi Thanks for the information you sent as a newbie every little helps. I am now getting used to the low carb way of eating ( hard at first) but getting there.
Cheers

Hi thanks for the info but I would not be very keen on a trampoline. If you read my post on treadmills I felt this would be more appropriate. Anyway any information is always useful.
Cheers

Thanks Toucan - Agree fresh air is always the best but not so sure of walking in the rain. We do have the kit for that sort of weather and use it if we have to but don't volunteer to go out in it. We don't mind any other weather - within reason - but see no fun in the rain. Bit difficult for me to run up and down the stairs as I haven't got any.
Hope to have the monitor soon to get some idea what is going on with BG levels so if its okay will post some results when I start to use it.

We have the same problem with stairs! LOL

Update having received my GlucoNavii kit and have been using it for two week now. Apart from an occasional spike when I have tried something different in my diet and it appears to me quite good. My average readings fall between 5.5 and 6.6 for all meals. The meter gives an average reading of 6.2. I believe I am right that the readings should fall between 4 -7 but perhaps someone can verify this for me. The other question is there a way to determine scale where I personally may fall between as it appears that everyone is different.

Any information would be appreciated.
