Hello all,

New to the Diabetes website after being diagnosed with the Big D last week. Being honest I do not have a clue where to start or what to do at the moment. I have an appointment with the Diabetes nurse next week but up till then I am a little lost. Decided the best way to go is to seriously clamp down on all the rubbish I have been eating and try and eat cleanly (nothing processed etc). Sticking to around 1000 calories a day and keeping carbs to a minimum and completely away from anything sugary.

Hoping that after talking to the nurse I can get a plan together covering off the do's and do not's!!

Also could I ask, did anyone have trouble sleeping but feel really tired when taking Metformin? I have taken a week at 500mg per day and am about to increase it to 1000mg per day for the next week and then another 500mg week after that. It doesn't state it as a side effect but just thought I would ask.

Thanks

Evander

Hi Evander, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'd suggest having a read of Maggie Davey's letter, which should give you a good idea of what it is all about and how to set about managing it 🙂 It's a serious condition, but as many thousands of people have proved who have joined here over the years, it can be managed well and most likely lead to you feeling much better than you did prior to your diagnosis, so it's not all bad news 🙂

Not a metformin user, so can't answer that question, but hopefully someone will be along soon who can 🙂 Keep asking questions, there will always be someone here who knows the answer! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Evander from a fellow T2.
I didn't notice any affects at all from metformin. I was very tired/out of it already when diagnosed.

Hi @Evander1010
You seem to have a great grip on the things you need to do , well done.
Metformin gave me some gastro intestinal side effects, but not sleeping side effects
If you have any other questions, please get back to us..
Oh btw , when my blood sugars were not in control, I felt really sleepy after any meal

I would think the tiredness is more to do with too high blood glucose rather than the drug quite honestly.

Hello - My Hba1c started at 76 and after 2 weeks has dropped to 65. Not been tested since then but have an appointment to attend a DESMOND clinic this Wednesday where I hope I will get some more advice. I have dropped around 28lbs since the first test and after some research I am considering the Newcastle University Diabetes Type 2 diet: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/magres/research/diabetes/reversal/#publicinformation

Has anyone done this diet before and if so how did they find it and what was the outcome?

Thanks

Evander

You might be feeling tired due to insufficient calories. If you are reducing the starches and sugars then avoiding anything low fat will help, as will getting your body to switch to burning fats, called ketosis, can help as that part is probably still working well, where the glucose control is the wonky one.

Hi and welcome, the others have said it all so ill just reiterate the low carb/good high fats and that my tiredness improved massively as my blood sugars dropped
