Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been diabetic (Type 2) for a number of years and unfortunately not managed it well. My HbA1c results would average 100 (11.3%). After a long period of illness, an MRI scan of my head and neck revealed 'furring' of the arteries and a drastic change of diet became essential. This has led to my last HbA1c being in the low 50s (6.7% -ish), and I feel so much better.

Hi Ron, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good to hear you are managing to get things under control 🙂 I think that we don't realise how poorly we have been feeling until we start improving our levels 🙂 If there is anything we can help with, please let us know 🙂

Hello Ron and welcome to forum.glad you have such good results

Welcome Ron, glad that you are starting to get control of this.
It is great when you start to feel better after feeling so ill.

I read an article in the Guardian recently that suggested the way breakfast cereals are processed removes the benefits associated with whole grains and that we shoudn't eat them. I emailed DaibetesUK as they recommend Shredded Wheat and Weetabix and they claimed it doesn't affect the grains. Any idea who is right? (I usually have porridge.)

Cereals are known as serial killers 🙂 So best stick to your porridge or look to an omelette if you need to go lower in carbs.

Welcome to the forum 🙂

I used to love Weetabix until I got diagnosed and discovered what it did to my blood sugar levels 😱 :( Shredded Wheat may be better, although I find it like eating packaging, so haven't much experience there 😱 The thing to do is to use a blood glucose meter to see how you are personally affected by different things, as in Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S 🙂 Some people are fine with porridge, others not, it can be very individual, and most likely related to our individual gut bacteria. Experiment, and find what works for you 🙂 If no cereals work, there's nothing wrong with bacon and eggs! 🙂

I do not eat grain now.
My doctors have been telling me that doing so will cause my imminent demise, consistently from the early 1970s.
When they bullied me into following their diet sheets I always felt ill slow and dull. When they cut down the calories I went pale and limp.
Returning to a low carb diet always put me right, even when diabetes was diagnosed two years ago.
I burnt the diet sheets in the garden next day and used them to light a barbecue.
