Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am type 2 diabetes and it really confuses me. I am unsure whether I should or should not test regularly and also how I should feel if my sugars are UP. My reading this morning e.g. was 21.9 and said ketones. Should I be concerned. ?

Yes, you should be concerned. Normal non-D blood glucose runs round about 5.0 to 7.0 (ish) Don't overthink to ketones though - an ordinary blood glucose meter cannot actually measure them so what it does, when the level of your blood glucose gets a bit high, is say 'ketones' to remind you to test for them on a different type of meter you doctor will have provided you with, if you fall into a category that needs to do that. It's not usual for most Type 2s to need to - so it looks like you don't either at the moment to me!

Tell us more though - how do you treat your diabetes? How long diagnosed and how was it discovered? What medications have you been given? What have you been told to do with regard to diet?

Hi trophywench and thankyou. You have definitely put my mind at ease with the ketones situation. I feel my diabetes has of late been getting worse as my fasting glucose readings in the morning are always between 9 and 13, is this bad. I am due a review next month. Question is should I wait or book an earlier appointment?

Hi Jeanie, welcome. I would imagine you are not feeling great while your numbers are high :( I would say that testing is key to finding out what foods work for you and what to avoid. As @trophywench has said, it would be helpto know a bit more about how you manage your diabetes and what medication you take?
You will find all the information you need to help you here on the forum, read as much as you can and ask any questions you have. Remember that it’s carbohydrates that push those numbers up, rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, also fruit has a lot of natural sugar, especially tropical fruits so be careful how much you have, two small pieces a day are about average.
