Hi,

I've just joined the forum.

Currently, I'm in hospital as last week, I had to have two toes removed on my right foot. The toes that were removed were the big toe and the one right next to it The toes were infected right to the bone and I hadn't even noticed myself.

I wonder if anyone has their toes amputated and how they managed when they first go home.

Hi Lucy, you are very welcome here. I can’t offer any advice, but I wish you well adapting to your situation. Diabetics often have a lot to overcome, and they always seem to, so stay positive. 🙂

Hi Lucy welcome to the forum.
I am sorry to hear about your foot problems, I’ve got 7 toes myself, a full compliment on my right foot .I have not lost a big toe , though I nearly did. I have heard that for a while balancing may be a problem, so you may need a walking aid for a while .

When you get home follow the hospitals advise about walking, having it dressed etc. Have you been provided with a dressing sandal yet, if not please ask the nurses for one.

I think if you are not already with a NHS podiatrist you should be referred to one, the hospital can arrange this for you, if they don’t then the Gp can. The nhs podiatrists are fantastic and now do all my foot checks as well as giving my nails a professional trim.

Hi Liz, thank you for your reply. As the wound was big and deep, the hospital is using a Wound VAC. If the wound looks good on Monday, the hospital can start arranging for my discharge.
I have been given a special boot that gives pressure on the heel instead of the toes for walking.
A podiatrist is going to be arranged when I'm ready to be discharged.
Due to problems with walking a few years ago, I already have a Walker at home to help with walking and has a seat on it as well.

Hello Lucy, Its nice you can discuss you`re problem with the forum. You sound very positive and you have the full support of all of us, I`m very sorry you have had to have surgery in such a dramatic manner but rest assured with the correct follow up there`s no reason you can`t continue as normal. Hello Lucy, it sounds like you are getting good care and doing all the right things. Thee is usually someone around on the Forum that has a similar experience or can point someone in the right direction. Good luck on your hospital discharge and it would be good to hear how you are managing when you get home.
