I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about a month ago and At the moment I’m trying to work out how best to manage it. My doctor’s been great but I feel very much like a newbie at this. Please could you let me know what emergency food you keep on you to deal with low sugar? Also how do you tell the difference between feeling ill because of low sugar and high sugar? Thanks v much x

Hi Simtree

If the doctor has put you on medication which can cause low blood glucose, he also has to provide you with the means to 'fingerprick test' your blood. Hence the way to tell for sure, is to test our blood.

I'm Type 1, so obviously need to inject insulin since my body no longer produces any, unlike the vast majority of T2s who still are able to produce more than enough, but instead their bodies can't use it as efficiently as they're supposed to. High BG feels totally different to low BG to most people so those that are liable to get them, quickly have to learn recognise that they are. Many of us carry a few jelly babies - about 3 of them is often enough to sort ourselves out. We have to test our blood again in 10-15 minutes to make sure the JBs have worked sufficiently.

What meds are you on, and where have you been told that you are likely to suffer low BG?

Hello @Simtree welcome to the forum. May I point you to the post at the top of the Newbies section and read this post, this will give you an insight as to the best course of action to take. You can ask as many questions as you like, don`t be over concerned at this point but you need to take control of your diagnosis. Please let us know what your results are also what medication you are on .if any, this will allow members to give you an informed opinion of the best advice available. https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes.10406/

Welcome to the forum Aintree from a fellow T2.
I hear jelly babies a lot & Lucozade (though that has less sugar now).
