Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
My name is Sylvie, I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic today, so look forward to reading up on things.
I was a Nurse so have some insight, however I am well aware of how quickly things can change LOL. I have been being good with my diet, exercise is difficult due to other conditions but am aware of it's importance. My first appt with the diabetic clinic is in 2 weeks time, but I am finding reading up on things interesting.
I look forward to browsing the site and gaining more knowledge x
Sylvie.

Hallo. Good place for info, I was diagnosed in Feb, this place has helped me more than my clinic. 🙂

Hello Sylvia. Welcome to the forum.
It can come as a shock when your first diagnosed. Please feel free to ask any questions, we’ll do our best to help, no question is daft ok and it’s likely we will supprise you with a few things.

How did you come to be diagnosed.

As for exersize, you don’t have to go to the gym and sweat buckets, if your able going for a walk regularly will help and if you’re not able to, don’t worry, you can only do what you can do.

I don’t know if you have found our very helpful thread for the newly diagnosed, aplologies if you have .
useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes.
For future reference you’ll find it at the top of the newbies forum.
Their is a lot more useful info there but I suggest you start with.
Jennifer’s advise.
Test review adjust by Alan S.
Maggie Daveys letter .

Also if you wish to self test and you’re nurse advises you not to , sadly this is the case for most T2 who are not on meds that can cause hypo’s.
But we believe it’s very useful to discover which carbohydrates we can and can’t tolerate.
The SD Codefree meter is the cheapest one we know of to self fund.
It’s available from Amazon.

Welcome Sylvia, like Brando77 the information on here has helped me much more than the GP or the diabetic nurse, I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago and also have other medical issues that make exercise a bit of a challenge. I borrowed a neighbours dog and started walking slowly, I am now up to 4km most nights and have been amazed at how much it influences my blood glucose levels. The food ideas here have also opened up a whole new way of eating, I invested in a steamer and air fryer and am really enjoying finding out what works best for me.
Read as much as you can here, so much practical and sound advice, it will really help you :D

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Hi @Sylvie and welcome to this friendly forum. I have the members here to thank for helping me bring my blood sugar readings down to a pre-diabetic range. I would not have had a clue without them.
There is plenty to read in all the different sections and any questions, ask away.

I would say the same as well, but that is not to say the doctors & nurses & the hospital have not been great so far (no so sure about my GP's yet but they will learn).
as already recommended I think the key to success is to keep an eye on you BG levels to learn what foods are good, which are badd & which you should moderate. but don't get hung up on expecting great results every day.

Welcome to the Forum. Exercise wise I hate the gym so try Zumba once or twice a week and do my best to walk where possible. I have a car but live on good public transport routes so use those in the day which makes me either walk 15 mins to the tram stop or get on and off buses. As the bus is opposite my house I get off a couple of stops early and walk the rest.

Thank you, brill advice, I had read the article about recent advice not to test blood sugars, but being old school I had decided if I was diagnosed I would self fund a monitor LOL. Lots more to read though! A font of knowle

Thanks you. I also have Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis, Hypermobility plus a few other things LOL . Had one knee replaced, Which is brilliant. I do walk but cannot walk too far. I try to bike if replacement knee allows. Swimming I guess is the best bet so hopefully will try this.
