Hello, I am a fairly newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic (beginning of November) and just joined the site as it seemed like a really helpful resource. I'm beginning to get the hang of things and feeling a lot better than when i was admitted to hospital but it's still all new to me. Glad to meet/ talk to everyone.

Hello Jpatti, and welcome 🙂

Do tell us a bit more about yourself, and about your diabetes - eg how you were diagnosed, and what insulin you have been put on.

TheClockworkDodo I was diagnosed on my mums birthday (happy birthday to her) and a week before my 21st birthday (happy birthday to me!). I'd noticed some symptoms for a couple of months such as drinking a lot of water and needing the toilet a lot but was burying my head in the sand until one week i lost almost 2 stone and stopped eating. After some trouble with the doctor being a bit useless i got a blood test and was called that night saying i should go to A&E as my BG levels was 18.9. This went up to 26.4 during the night and my ketones were 6.4 at their highest so spent a couple of nights in hospital. Im now on Levemir and Humalog and feeling much better although Christmas was tough. Other than that im a student in Sheffield. Thank you for asking 🙂

Hee hee - I was 22 when they assured me there would be a cure within 10 years.

My advice to you? Don't hold your breath waiting for that! LOL

Welcome 🙂 like you I was diagnosed T1 at a similar time. Also ended up as an emergency admittance to hospital. Like you I’m getting my head around it - takes a while huh ! I’ve gained huge info from this forum and asked a lot of questions to which I have received loads of helpful info. Anyways - you’re not on your own 🙂 nice to meet you.

Hello @Jpatti , welcome to the forum. What a Birthday prezzy to give Mum and yourself.
I am glad you’re feeling better.
Feel free to ask questions we’ll do our best to help.

Welcome Jpatti

Well not the ideal birthday present, to say the least!!!
I am glad that you have found this forum. as Claudia said there is a lot of help and Support available on here. Just ask any questions that you have.

One book I would recommend is Type1 Diabetes in Children, adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It is quite expensive but is a fantastic resource with very clear explanations. I still go back to it regularly for information about why things are happening or for strategies to deal with specific problems. It is well indexed and regularly updated with the latest technology available (which is changing so much at present so you have joined us at a good time, if there is ever a good time!!)

Hi JPatti, hope you soon feel at home here.

Hi @Jpatti and welcome to the gang 🙂

Hello and welcome @Jpatti 🙂

I hope things are settling down for you. There are a lot of things to get the hang of in quick time !

I hope you're enjoying student life, I was a student in Sheffield back in the mid 1980's, happy days 🙂

Sorry, I missed your reply for some reason, @Jpatti - that doesn't sound like a good birthday week for you or your Mum, but I'm glad you got a diagnosis before things got any worse .

It's worth letting the ptb at your uni know about your diabetes, if you haven't already, so that they know what to do if, for instance, you have a hypo while you're there and need help dealing with it. What are you studying, out of interest?

Hi Jpatti and welcome.🙂
