hello all, i'm sean, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a few weeks before xmas, but apparently I've had it for years... ooops. still feeling really rough, with the added joy of knowing how a pin cushion feels

Hi Sean, welcome to the group.... You will find lots of help & good information here

Hi Sean I was diagnosed in November last year, how are you coping, what insulin regime are you on and oh as for the pin cushion you do get used to it haha x

thanks grovesy, and hi kaylz. coping ok-ish, moved house last week which I could've done without. insulinwise, I have abasaglar and apidra, think I've spelt them right!

I have no idea about either of those lol, how did your diagnosis come about, I was diagnosed out of the blue had a blood test as I had slightly raised blood pressure and all it came back was high blood sugar so I was called into the Dr for a fasting test which was high and was told to come back in the afternoon, went to work and returned in the afternoon to be tested again, she then tested me for ketones which were present and I was taking into hospital that night x

Hiya Sean Penguin and welcome.🙂 I'm on Apidra too! Most peeps seem to take Novorapid.

Welcome to the forum. Can I just ask does type 1 come on suddenly or are you born with it and it slowly gets worse?

my diagnosis was a bit hectic to be honest, I ended up in a&e with ketoacidosis, ive had pancreas problems for decades but apparently now its given up the ghost completely. been told I probably won't survive another attack like that. so I got my diagnosis at some point in the first couple of days in hospital spaced on painkillers!

I was taken into hospital and put on a I think they call it a sliding scale I was only in until the next afternoon where I was given some insulin pens and needles and told there you go take that, not much information given to me at all since then the DSN has been wonderful 🙂, do you carb count to adjust your insulin for meals etc (sorry about all the questions we all seem rather nosey don't we) haha 🙂 x

Hi Sean, sounds like you've been through the mill to say the least bound to take some time to fully recover I was also diagnosed with type 1 a week ago due to DKA (having previously been diagnosed with type 2 a couple of years ago), can I ask how your blood sugars are as like you I'm still feeling quite rough x

I did punctuate my post with emojis which don't appear to work on here! I've found them now 😎😛😱🙄o_O

hello roisin, blood sugars are still very up and down, it can go from too high to emergency cola time really quickly. itl settle for a few days, but at the mo the slightest change in routine throws everything off. is that how yours are?

Not yet, they do fluctuate but stay inbetween 15-20 most of the day, no danger of needing a fizzy drink just yet (although I do fear the dreaded hypo, even in spite of my love of coke & jelly babies). Did yours stay high for the first week or two after diagnosis?

not too sure about first week as I was in hospital for that, but it was way too high most of the time. gradually its averaging out lower now. I cant have jelly beans unfortunately as I'm vegetarian and they contain gelatin, mores the pity

Glad things are on the up (or down rather). Heck of a learning curve isn't it! I went swimming the other morning to try and bring sugars down, it had the opposite effect and they shot up to 30 😱 lot to learn x

I don't know how emojis work on social media (I don't go in for social media), but web forums usually have their own emojis, which you can add using the smiley button, or as text if you know the text code (e.g. typing : ) without the space gives 🙂); or if the forum allows external images (as this one does), you can lik to external icon sites, such as the JonRB site.
