hi just been diagnosed with type 2 got a 82 on my hbac prescribed metformin, I just wondered should I start monitoring my blood glucose or wait till I change my diet although I tend to eat reasonably sensibly I think ! Also have high cholesterol at 7.5 so a bit unsure as how to change diet or is it just trial and error
 
Hey - welcome aboard. May as well start monitoring at least once a day just to measure the trend

I was advised that exercise, particularly muscle work, is the fastest way of bringing down your blood sugar so give that a try

Change of diet is simple really; cut out the carbs & processed sugar. Everything else is fair game

I've switched from munching down 3 x weetabix and a bagel in the morning to a plain, but full fat yoghurt with berries and a piece of fruit.

That with meat & veg and a few potatoes or small rice has worked like a charm

Of course start testing. Before and after eating. That way you will know what effect any changes you make have.
 
MJ68, carbs are the ones to watch and I now think of everything else that will go on my plate before including the carbs. So very small portions of bread (Burgen has the lowest), potatoes, pasta and rice. Avoid crisps, chocolate and biscuits etc. whilst you're trying to reduce your levels.
If your GP won't supply a meter and testing strips, I'd advice buying your own (Codefree is the cheapest I think). Test in the morning to see what your waking level is...it will be higher initially but aim for below 7. Test before meals and then 2 hrs after. NICE guidelines suggest 7 or below before meals and no more than 8.5 two hours after. Lower is better but if you're regularly 2-3 points higher after meals, adjust the carb content down and reduce portions. A walk after meals uses up the glucose and more exercise will really help.

It's hard at first but you'll get there. Beware of too much fruit and fruit juices. Things that sound healthy are not necessarily going to keep your blood sugars on an even keel. Plenty of water and give yourself some time to get down. It can take a while but it can be done and you'll feel so much better for it. Good luck!

Oh - and you cholesterol will reduce too, as you lower the carbohydrates. It isn't dietary fat that sends it upwards at all !
