Hi there,
My two year old daughter has just been diagnosed with type one diabetes, following a severe episode of DKA and a stay in a high dependency unit.
Our specialist nurses recommended this forum for general advice and to chat to other people about their experiences.
She's currently on novorapid and lantus but they have been talking to us about pumps. We are going to discuss that more in a few weeks when she has settled a bit.
She's been amazing and doesn't seem to be bothered by any of the insulin injections or blood sugar testing. The nurses are going into her nursery this week to train the staff so she can go back there.
Our biggest challenge since being home has been her constant hunger. The Dr said this is due to her being unwel for weeks and now her body is catching up. They have said this will wear off in the next week or so. She's also intolerant to cows milk protien so we've been hunting for low carb dairy free snacks!
We are in Cambridgeshire and would love to know of any social groups for little ones we could go along to.

Hi Sarah, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your little one's diagnosis, particularly at such a young age :( Good to hear she is coping with it so far. A pump will really help in the future, I am sure, so it's good that it's already being discussed.

Regarding hunger - I was diagnosed aged 49 and I was absolutely ravenous once they started giving me insulin! I'd lost a lot of weight very rapidly, ending up with DKA also. The difference the insulin made was amazing! It should hopefully settle back to normality before too long, I would say I was particularly hungry for about a month then it eased off, but obviously I was much older.

If you don't already have a copy, I would highly recommend getting Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - considered to be the 'bible' for children and young people on insulin regimes, and a very useful reference. Also, I'd recommend having a look at the Children with Diabetes website - they also have a Facebook group if you are on that, and may be able to get in touch with other parents of T1s in your area. Has she got a Rufus bear? You can get one free from JDRF 🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will do our best to help out! 🙂

Thank you Northerner! Yes we have a rufus bear, it helped a lot in the first couple of days.
I will have a look the book and the website. Thank you for the advice x

Sorry to hear of your daughters diagnosis. This forum is a great place for help and advice.

Sorry to hear about your little one, but glad she's taking it in her stride and you seem to have great support from the nurses. On the dairy free snack front that must be tricky! Have you tried Holland and Barrett's or a similar shop in their vegan section? They have lots of snack foods that are really lovely and dairy free because they're vegan, you might find some low carb options there, you'll definitely find soya ice cream which is much much nicer than it sounds (honest 🙂) not necessarily low carb but nice for a treat. If you like cooking the Hemsley and Hemsley cookbooks and website are worth a look, they are generally dairy free (some recipes do use yoghurt) so you might find some ideas there, oh and alpro do a lovely range of soya yoghurt and puddings too, some of the yoghurts are unsweetened (because soya milk naturally tastes sweeter) so quite low carb. Anyway welcome aboard, sorry to have to be here but hopefully you'll find it useful 🙂
