Hello
I have been a diabetic for 6 yrs but have dealt with it with diet alone, about a month ago feeling pretty ill went to Dr OMG it has opened a can of worms, I am now on 2000mg of met and 38 units of 30/70 insulin, I informed the DVLA and they have revoked my licence to 3 yr review but I am no longer aloud to pull a trailer, drive a mini bus or up to 7.5 tons. (I am gutted. why is this so. I have never had a hypo) nothing else wrong with me, heart liver kidneys all fine.

Not a happy bunny.

Hi Robin

Yes, being on insulin meant an automatic 3 year restricted licence and loss of entitlement to drive lorries, buses etc. I don't have a need to drive them and just renew my car driving licence every 3 years.

However, there is now a vocational entitlement to drive some of these vehicles. Obviously the safety of other road users and passengers is paramount (for any vehicle but more so for a large lorry or bus) so the application process to drive them whilst on insulin appears to be quite involved.

Details from DVLA below:

I THINK (you'll have to check Robin) that you have a time-frame to get it re-instated within so long. If you let it lapse for longer though, you'd have to take an extra driving test - same as you would, if you had only passed your 'car' test now.

(Anyway - this will stand you in good stead for what will happen to your (and everyone else's) licence anyway when you hit 70 - you'll already know the ropes !)

It is purely a safety issue - the smaller vehicle you are driving the less injury and damage you could cause should you happen to go hypo at the wheel - and of course you haven't been hypo before - because you weren't taking the medications that might cause it. Now - you are. It's that simple.

They aren't treating you any different to anyone else on that cocktail - or insulin alone - which includes every single Type 1 with a UK licence!
