Found this group just a few weeks ago and I am impressed by all the useful threads.
Diagnosed with T2 approx 12yrs ago - lost weight and controlled by diet for several years, then started with Metformin which has been increased over the years and pioglitazone added a couple of years ago.
Control was not good, so decided to try Newcastle Diet after reading the research papers and wanting to change my lifestyle.
After 5 weeks have lost 10 kgs (107.5 to 97.5) and blood sugar lower than any previous measurements with no drugs.
My aim is to get to approx 90 kg and control with minimum drugs.

Hi Allinfit, welcome to the forum 🙂 Well done on sticking to the diet, it's a toughie but you look like you are having great success 🙂 Are you doing it under the supervision of your GP, or by yourself based on information you have read?

Sorry if this is a bit long for a "Hello" thread and needs to be moved

I heard about the Newcastle Study on the web and I recently went to a
Diabetes UK presentation where it was mentioned plus further research
being sponsered by Diabetes UK but definitely not recommended until lastest
research results known.

It was a really good meeting with lots of infomation, discussions and life stories and it spurred me on to become more pro-active.

So I read the research papers and thought I would give it a trial for two
weeks or so, to see if it suited me, so I didn't consult the diabetic nurse as I
thought I might not even last two weeks.

At the end of two weeks I had reduced my meds,in stages, from Morning 1g
SR Metformin and 3mg Pioglitazone and an evening 1g SR Metformin to
nothing

So I decided to carry on and complete the eight weeks.

This week (6 weeks in), my morning (7am) blood glucose readings were 5.4,6.1,5.8,5.3 and 5.1.
Evening (between 10-11pm) readings 5.8, 6.4 and 7.1
Highest reading during the day was 8.8

I've never had readings so good so I am extremely happy and the low readings are the real motivation to stay on the diet.

My annual review is due early May so I will be able to compare my HA1bc results.

Brilliant ! There are lots of posts by others inc Smithgareth about his success with Newcastle Diet 😎 Well done for giving it a go with good results. 🙂
 
No problem Hobie - I'll add a more complete post in an relavent thread, happy to share my experiences and learn from other members.
 
i thought about trying the newcastle diet but im a bit uncertain if i could manage it due to my work and present weight.im at 11 stone 9 and i think id need to be under 800 calories a day where as i need 2800 ish because of my work so i would be 2000 calories a day short so 14000 a week/ 42000 a month under so worst case id loose 12 lbs a month ish for 3 months so after the 3 months id be around 9 stone which is about a stone under my lowest safe bmi.
Fairly certain my doctor wouldnt be happy about that, if i had started newcastle diet on diagnosis i would have managed it just but learnt about it too late i guess.
its very frustrating to have missed out on a possible diabetes reset but i just darnt try it at the moment
 
Banjo - how about swapping some of your Carb calories to protein and fat?

Bearing in mind protein actually keeps you fuller for much longer than the equivalent calories in carbohydrate - you might find you can get away with eating less cals that way?

Only a suggestion - if you want to try.
