Hi I am Bobbie, been type 2 diabetic for about a year with a long family history of the illness. Feeling rotten for a few months beforehand and after the doctor tested me I had a reading of 13. I take 2 metformin daily. It is only now that I am understanding the how importance of carbohydrate reduction. I always thought it was just about sugar. Stupid me. I don,t obsess about taking readings now though I did at the start. My question is this.
Can having a cold affect a reading. This morning I took my blood and had a reading of 8.4 which is high for me. I was horrified. i have had a cold for over a week now so I am hoping that is the reason for my reading.

Welcome to the forum BobbieH.

You're right, any infection, including a cold, can increase insulin resistance, which causes higher than usual blood glucose levels. There's not much you can do when metformin is your only medication, apart from continuing to eat low carbohydrate food and drink.

Thank you. You have set my mind at rest. I will continue to monitor this over the next few days and hopefully my lousy cold will go away soon

Hi BobbieH, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the cold, I hope you are fullly recovered very soon and get those readings back down again 🙂

Hi and welcome to the forum, i am newly diagnosed like you and i was also alarmed by my readings when i had a bad cold just before christmas. The readings settled for me as the cold cleared

Yes Bobbie - and remember - there are NO daft questions on here - so if there's anything you don't know and want to - or just wonder if ..... don't wait for someone else! Ask !
