🙂 if someone has ataxia (shakes) and cannot administer insulin how do they manage if they want to be indepentant?

Hi Shaunboy, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm not sure what the answer is to this. I know we have had members in the past who have had difficulties using insulin pens or syringes because of peripheral neuropathy and their solution was to use an i-port - perhaps this would be suitable? Is this a problem you have, or someone you know?

Requesting to be put on a pump may be a better scenario because I'd imagine you'd only have to worry about pressing a button then... but this is just an idea off the top of my head.

Probably best to speak to a HCP to see if there are any other possible options. Hopefully a member of the forum can relate better and suggest something.

Thank you for replying.I had a stroke 2years ago and cannot walk,also have ataxia and various other problems.been diabetic for 4years,can't hold a cup have. District nurses come to the home 3 times a day,but I would like. Freedom to do myself.also can novo rapid be given at the same time as lever mere?

Hi Shaun, very sorry to hear about the stroke and the problems it has left you with. Using the i-port would mean a nurse visit every 3 days instead of three times a day but I'm not sure what you could do about the levemir as you would need that once or twice a day depending on how well it works for you. If you need two injections of levemir a day then it might be an idea to change to lantus which generally has a longer duration i.e. once a day for many people. Have you tried asking the Stroke Association to see if they have any aids that might help you?

with a pump you only need rapid insulin so no need to worry about the levemir 🙂

Sue, I did wonder about a pump, but wondered if the controls might be too difficult to use and also if it would be safe given the stories I hear about faulty sets, non-delivery problems etc. and how quickly things can go downhill if you can't rectify them quickly? You'd need someone on call who could do a set change fairly swiftly or to come and keep you going on injections until it could be done?

I'm wondering if Shaun could manage an Omnipod. As all that needs to be done is to push the pod on. Obviously someone needs to still check at least once a day all is well and to fill a replacement pod for him
The handset I also wondered if it could be on the table so he could take aim with finger and poke the right buttons.
Obviously I have no idea how Shaun manages to test his blood sugars or even if he can manage this.
