Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone I am a new member to the forum, joined as I need some help and advice on food and exercise.

I am a type 1 diabetic, diagnosed in 1995 when I was 15. Control has been very good but I did have a few years when I went a bit mad and lost a bit of discipline but overall I think that I am controlling my blood levels well.

I am 31 now and weigh in at 15st, but want to get down to what I weighed in my mid 20s which is 13.5st. I am a regular user at the gym and do hour and half sessions about 3 times a week aswell as walking the dog, walking with my son, playing football, etc. so I am not shy of exercise.

I think my main let down is on the food side of things, I have never really taken as much interest as I should do into the foods I eat and how it affects my blood, just obviously stayed away from those I need to. I need some advice as to healthy food that I can eat that gives me enough energy and keeps my blood sugar levels at the right level to exercise.

Anyway its only a quick introduction from myslef, I will be reading through the forums and posting a few topics asking for more advice soon.

Hi Ineson, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'd suggest starting a food diary, recording everything you eat including calories, fat and most especially, carbohydrates. Eat as you normally would, then after a week you can review the notes and look for items that might be replaced with a healthier alternative, or discarded altogether. You might also want to record pre- and post-meal BG readings so you can monitor the effects of the different food on your levels.

A suitable diet for slow, steady release of energy is the GI or GL diet (Glycaemic Index, Glycaemic Load). A useful introduction to the principles is the GL Diet for Dummies . Pay particular attention to the amount of carbs you consume, as more carbs=more insulin which can make weight more difficult to shift.

Welcome to the forums ineson 🙂

welcome ineson...you will definitely find lots of help and advice here. Have you done a DAFNE course? also, meeting with your dietician would also be a great starting point.

As Alan said, keeping a food diary and then a note of your levels after eating them will give you a better understanding of the food you are eating (e.g. some foods will spike quickly, some release slowly).

I'm sure these guys will be able to tell you much more than I will!
