Hi, I have just joined, just learning the ropes so to speak, but this site came highly recommended by my Diabetes Nurse.
I have recently been diagnosed with emphysema and type 2 diabetes, which is making me wonder if both are connected in some way?
Anyone experienced both conditions together and if so how do you manage the conditions?

Hi @Liz Hood and welcome to the forum - it's a great source of information and brilliant that your Diabetes Specialist Nurse has recommended it - I can't help with question as such, but hopefully someone will pop along soon with some advice

Thank you for the warm welcome, tad scary at the moment, but won't take long to get over things and crack on and manage the conditions.

Yes, they do seem to be related; click this Google search link emphysema type 2 diabetes, and then click the Show More button.

The answer, as always, is to treat both with a healthy diet. You are probably cracking on with that already, otherwise this Freshwell Meal Planner and Food list infographic and the Freshwell App are great starting points.

Thank you so much, the list of foods is really useful and will be very beneficial using the Freshwell App. Cannot thank you enough. Will be going through my food cupboards this week, donate unopened no go foods to a nearby food bank - that way I will not be tempted by foods to avoid.

The article on emphysema and t2dm is interesting. I wasn't advised by my consultant, but it makes sense that both may be linked. Also, I didn't realise medication for the emphysema may affect blood sugars, may need to go back to the consultant and get more advice on that score

If you are taking steroids then that can give people problems with managing blood glucose.

Hi @Liz Hood welcome to the forum, great place with lots of good advice and an awful lot of experience of managing particularly type 2. In addition to the Freshwell stuff (which I have used) there are other good sources of recipes etc. in the LearningZone above. I also use Keto recipes and the Fast 800 recipe book although I adjust the recipes to increase proteins and fats above what is called out in the recipe, as they are aimed at people looking to lose weight which is not an issue for me.

Hello, thank you for your advice, I will take a look at the LearningZone, I checked out this site a couple of weeks ago and received my diagnosis, obviously not as a member, but found the recipes I found mouth-watering to say the least, but will make a point of taking a look at the Keto diet publications. Unfortunately, I need to shed a few pounds exercise regimen has been hampered a little due to my lungs, but determined not to let them stop me from trying. About to start Tia Chi lessons, I understand they are going to help teach me alternative breathing methods. And you are right, so far I have received some really good advice from this forum, of which I am grateful.

Welcome to the forum @Liz Hood

Glad you have found us 🙂

Hope you manage to find ways to help both your T2D and your emphysema. We have quite a few members who have two or more conditions whose needs have to be balanced and met, so you aren’t alone in facing that tricky juggling act!
