I got diagnosed as Type 2 in February as HBcA1 was 9.9 up from 6. Increase is due to steroids involved with cancer treatments. My GP put me straight onto Metformin which really didn’t mix and made me really unwell, she then tried deluglatide which again made me unwell. Now I’ve been referred to a dietitian while she decides what’s next . I had treatment on Friday and have 3 days of steroids to take so my levels are all over the place - 17.5 on Friday night and lowest this morning at 13.5 but I still have more steroids to take. The reader shows ketones present which I’m never sure what to do about this other than eat some carbs and drink water.

I would not be surprised or dismayed if it turns out the best solution would be insulin, whilst the steroid treatment is ongoing at least. Your poor body is trying to fight two battles at once, which is extra hard for it.

Not so sure about the carbs - because whilst you certainly need food and want to make sure you're getting nutrition - think it might be easier for your blood glucose to do that more with enough protein and veg - but anyway Yes - drink more water than you usually do to attempt to reduce the ill effects of ketones.

Welcome to the forum @Kaybelle

Sorry to hear about the increase in BG levels from your steroids - it’s a pretty common thing, and hopefully your clinic/oncologists let you know to expect it.

As @trophywench says, don’t be worried if insulin is suggested as a way to keep your BG levels in range while you need to be on the steroids. As long as your energy intake is balanced your shouldn’t see any weight gain - though the insulin will allow you to access the energy in food that you may have been struggling to digest before, so you may have to slightly adjust your menu to keep things on an even keel.

Let us know how you get on at the appointment 🙂
