Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello, I am new here. I am type two diabetes diagnosed three years ago and have been taking Metformin 500 mg twice a day. At one point I got into remission but then that fell off as I probably wasn’t careful enough. My Diabetes has generally been controlled with Metformin until a few months ago when suddenly it became uncontrollable. I’m now for the last three days on both Metformin and gliclazide. However my numbers are still very bizarre reaching over 20 MMOL and commonly between 15 and 20 and at one time over 27. I’m also taking blood pressure medicine including Ramipril and Indapamide. I wondered if anyone on this forum has had experience of this combination interfering with Metformin and blood sugar control?

Hi @Shairz and welcome to the forum (lovely name)

I can't answer your questions directly as I'm not on any medication, but I'm sure someone will have some help or advice for you.

Alan 😉

Hello @Shairz welcome to the forum, have you tryed keeping a food diary do you test your blood sugars at all before eating and after two hours after eating. As for your other meds im sorry i dont know about them Do you have DSN who can advise you at all. Good luck and keep us posted. Remember no post to small/large or to silly

I'm not on that combination but my blood pressure became too high when in September I was taken off idapamide a diuretic because I was put on an SGLT2 which has a diuretic effect. It wasn't acted upon til December when I was put back on the idapamide. In February my metformin was reduced to one tablet and my BG has been very variable since then. Sometimes I know I've eaten too many carbs but other times it's not clear. 16 is the highest lve ever been. I also take perindipol ( for blood pressure)
With your numbers if you haven't had too many carbs eg hot cross buns and Easter eggs when the remedy is clear, I would contact the surgery.

Thank you. Yes I have a food diary. It’s very odd and nothing except not eating stops it. I am seeing a pharmacy attached to my GP. It just seems to have suddenly become out of control. The only major difference was beginning the Indapomide

One of the rare side effects is pancreatitis so of you have any stomach pain or swelling then that is a red flag. It also says it may not be suitable if diabetic. Hopefully the pharmacy will be able to advise.

Thanks so much. So for you coming off the blood pressure medicine Indapomide worsened your BS levels While for me going on Indapomide may have caused my blood sugars to rise. It’s confusing. Mine goes up if I move at all these days. It’s so odd. I am under the GP surgery who delegates diabetes medication to the pharmacist. He put me on the new one for BS gltogether with metformin. I have been taking them both for 4 days now but it has made no difference. So I started looking online and found that Metformin can be counter productive if take with Indapomide in some people.

So I have been on

Gliclazide and Merfotmin 4 days now with no difference. My levels are fluctuating in a crazy way. Which is why I read this extremely helpful forum. The only difference I can see in my diet is I did have major surgery last year in June but my sugars returned to normal after that. Until I stated Indapomide. They are thinking insulin next and I don’t want to go down that route so soon. .

Hi @Shairz and welcome to the forum from me - I had a brief encounter with Metformin whilst they were determining what type of diabetes I have but have been on Indipamide for some time and it hasn't had any effect on my BG, although it is a common side effect according to NICE

Hope you can find a solution to the problem 🙂

Thank you! This is so helpful. I was beginning to disperse that I was just getting out of control with the BS when I was doing nothing different

Coming off indapamide had a dramatic effect on my blood pressure. At end of November I had a septic finger and went to a walk in centre. My BP was 198 over 103. It had been 160 that month when I had a cataract op ( and steroids) it had been 120 for sometime on the indapamide and in September before stopped. I'm now concerned by @mashedupmatt info.
I haven't had BG checked by GP since December when idapamide reintroduced and I have now reduced metformin.
My bg reduced from 69 at end of June to 51 when idapamide stopped in September.
Obviously contacting surgery is still a good idea.

Thanks for this. I am going to try another Bp med. I am trying to find one that does not cause constipation. I am going to ask pharmacist tomorrow as my GP will not discuss medication and leaves to pharmacy

That's interesting I had never heard that blood pressure medications could cause constipation, I suppose if they are ones that are diuretic then people may become dehydrated which can cause constipation.
Certainly there are many, many blood pressure meds so finding one that is effective and getting the dose right without side effects may take a bit of trial and error.
I had been taking amlodipine for years but suddenly started to get swollen feet and ankles but changed to candesartan and it is OK. Some can give people a tickly cough, some can cause palpitations, some increased loo visits. I'm sure there will be one which suits you or a combination of 2.
