Hi everyone, had been feeling really unwell for some time and only went to the doctors as my eyesight deteriorated really quickly and I couldn't see my laptop screen to work. Doctor told me to follow The Blood Sugar diet and go for urgent blood tests. Blood tests showed that the HbA1c test came back at 98 so I have been told to continue with the diet and to take metformin. I have another appointment with the Diabetic Nurse this week to see how I am getting on. My blood sugar levels have come down from the 21s to around 7-8 so I'm happy with that. Diet is great, it basically follows the Mediterranean diet and haven't felt hungry.... yet!!

Have also seen the optician who has sorted me out with glasses so that I can see to work etc

Anyway that's a bit about my diabetes journey so far.
 
Hi @Barney531 and welcome to the forum from a fellow type 2. You sound very positive which is really great and your blood sugar has reduced nicely. I assume that on the Mediterranean diet you have reduced your carb intake?

Usually eyesight changes due to Blood Glucose changes are only temporary. SO your eyes may well change back again..
The Blood Sugar Diet is one of several similar approaches in Dr Michael Mosely's books. If you find the low calories too hard to cope with you could try just cutting carbohydrates (both sugars and starches) and increasing both Protein and traditional fat (so calories are not much changed) instead.
Personally I feel that the diet industry has shown that calorie restriction fails in the medium/longer term for most people since deprivation soon makes will power run out. So that (plus I was normal weight when diagnosed as T2) meant that I decided to try the Low Carb route to remission and weight loss. Note that I still lost around 1/6th of my total weight as my BHbA1C dropped below the pre-diabetic levels. Subsequently I have made a conscious effort to gain back 7lbs from that while still maintaining my non-diabetic HbA1C level.

I got much the same when I first posted years ago.
If your doctor and nurse are on board with the blood sugar diet, give it a try, if it suits you, and certainly following their advice can't be a bad thing.

Well done on your terrific progress so far, and great that you’ve found an approach that is working so well for your waistline, and your BG levels - while not leaving you feeling hungry. That’s such an important part of making sustainable changes!

The Mediterranean style diet is one of a number of approaches that have been found to be very effective in managing diabetes. It’s really a question of finding one that works for you and your own individual diabetes.

There are some additional Mediterranean meal suggestions here if they are helpful, along with a variety of other food plans, from calorie restricted to low-carb.


Great to hear your positive progress so far. Great stuff! And keep it up 🙂
