Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all
I was diagnosed with type2 diabetes about 3 weeks ago, at the ripe old age of 67yrs, i recently moved house and had to register with a new GP, I then had to have a blood test (first in a few years) i got a phone call to attend the surgery and was told i had Type2, having seen the symptons i've probably had it longer, but i have taken it all onboard and will just have to get on with it.

thanks for any advice given

Welcome @billjon 🙂 Do you know the result of the blood test that got you diagnosed with Type 2? Are you on any meds for it?

Hi Inka,

I was told by the doctor it was 90 and was put on metformin (which i am 3 weeks into) i was told there are some side effects but it's been fine so far.

I've also purchased an Accu-check instant monitor and test myself 2/3 times a day, getting readings of 11.5 mmol/L down to 8.6 mmol/L, i have cut out suger in drinks completely and reduced how much I eat (lost 10lbs in 3 weeks), and I still work full time and try to keep myself busy.

It was very overwhelming at first (and still is) and to be honest i was shocked, but slowly coming to terms with it and trying to organise myself o_O:rofl:

Ok, so 90 is well into the diabetic zone. However, it sounds like you’ve made a great start 🙂 Buying a glucose meter is brilliant - a real help. You’ll be able to see what meals work for your blood sugar. It’s all carbs you need to watch: savoury as well as sweet. You don’t have to cut them out completely but, depending on your pre-diagnosis diet, you might need to reduce them.

Have cut out all cakes, sweets, choccy and all the good stuff, thats probably why i've lost a bit of weight, i will treat myself now and again but i want to get it under control first,

thanks for your reply's

There are a few other things you need to be aware of that will push up blood glucose levels as it is ALL carbohydrates which convert to glucose. Watching intake of potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, pastry. cereals, tropical fruits. pre-prepared sauces, and ready meals which are all or can be high carb.
https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/ this link might help give you some ideas for low carb meals.
As you have a monitor establishing a routine of testing before you eat and after 2 hours will tell you if the meal is tolerated if the increase is less than 2-3 mmol/l.

Welcome to the forum @billjon

Sounds like you’ve made a great start so far! And yes, I think it’s helpful to keep the door open to occasional treats along my diabetes journey!

When it comes to managing your diabetes, it’s best to make changes to your menu and activity levels gradually - partly because they need to be sustainable long term, but also because very rapid and sudden changes to blood glucose levels are harder on the fine blood vessels, and changing things more gently will give your body time to adapt.

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy.
