Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
My name is Colin and I am Type 2. Diagnosed at the end of May and still getting the hang of ths diabetes lark. I am one of the lucky Type 2s who does not need to lose weight, however, when I was first alerted to my high blood glucose levels, I cut down on 'bad' sugars and consigned cake, biscuits and confectionery [as well as other similar things] to history. I have very good willpower. This, in addition to my regular gym visits contributed to my losing a stone in weight. I am currently around 10 and a half. I am concerned that in following my healthy diet, more weight will come off where I really don't want it to and need ideas on what I should do/eat to prevent this happening while not compromising the healthy diet required.
 
Hi Colin, welcome to the forum 🙂 What would you consider your 'ideal' weight? What sort of things are you eating currently? If you are eating a good, varied diet then you should 'settle' at a weight that suits your lifestyle 🙂 How did your diagnosis come about?

Hi Colin, when you cut out the cake etc did you replace it with anything? If you weren't overweight then perhaps you can top up your calories with low carb snacks. There are some very tasty low carb cake recipes on the net!
 
Welcome Colin. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic last year and sent on a prevention programme. I did not need to lose weight but reduced the carbs and am now underweight. However, I prefer that if it prevents diabetes although I don't think mine is weight related but just the wrong carbs - loads of fresh fruit, dried fruit, sandwiches, cereals, potatoes, pasta etc. Don't think much of the "eat well" plate either. I think if I carried on like that I would be well diabetic. I have had three normal hba1cs over the last 11 months but, each time, they creep up slightly so am testing now to see what foods are not good for me. I have learned on there that we are all different when it comes to things like bread, porridge etc.
 
I would give my eyeteeth to be in this position. 🙂

Thanks for your reply Northener. My diet pretty much follows what I was taught at my DESMOND sessions but I am conscious that the guidelines are mainly aimed at weight loss and this is what is happening to me. For my height, [5'9"] I'm still regarded as being a healthy weight at 10st2lb but I have started to look like a bit of a 'bag of bones' and would prefer it if I was nearer 11st which is still well within the healthy weight bracket. I was over 11st last year when classified in 'pre-diabetes' and I started my 'lifestyle change. My high blood glocuse was discovered from blood tests taken for another medical matter not linked to my diabetes. While I thought I was doing well avoiding sugary foods, I didn't anticipate the amount of wieght that would come off in doing so. I fought to hold off a diagnosis but to add insult to injury, I was diagnosed as Type 2 in May this year. I have lost about 6lbs in the last couple of months and while I have taken my diagnosis in my stride and tried not to feel sorry for myself since my diagnosis, I have begun to feel low of late and at times upset with the situation I'm in [mainly being the weight loss]. I am due an 'MOT' with my GP in October, so I will keep monitoring my weight. In the meantime, I might try upping my intake of unsaturated fats and maybe not be too strict on portion control.

Hi Radders, thank you for your reply. When I was diagnosed in pre-diabetes last year and I cut out sugary foods, I wasn't acting on any dietary advice so didn't replace them with anything. I think your suggestion may be worth trying. My colleague at work says that the dietary advice for diabetics seems very similar to Slimmers World and also that maybe I'm missing some carbs, 'specially after a gym session.

Maybe a prevention programme may have been a help to me at my pre-diabetes stage but I suppose it must be down to the local health authority involved. I thought I was doing good at cutting out the sugary things, but was not educated enough at that point to know that I should have maybe upped something else in their place. As fairly newly diagnosed, I was told not to worry about monitoring my blood sugar and I have another appointment with my GP in October. I'm currently on Metformin and a mild statin so hopefully my hba1c will have come down and he'll have some advice on the weight thing.
