Type 2
Hi everyone, I'm Gail and I have just been diagnosed with type 2. I've started on Metformin today and it seems like that's it until another blood test in 3 months! I do have an appointment with my surgery dietician next week, so I am hoping to learn more about how carbs affect my sugars then. I've been reading around the site and have learned so much already! 🙂

Hi Gail, welcome. I'm glad we've been helpful already. Did they by any chance give you a meter and strips so you can test your blood sugars?

Hi Gail. Welcome to the forum. I'm recently diagnosed too and still getting to grips with it. But everyone's your friend here. You're in the right place🙂.

Thanks Mark, that's great to know.

No, my GP said I didn't need to check my own sugars. The things I am reading on here are making me start to think differently, though!

That seems to be getting too common. You need to check your blood sugars to know you're heading in the right direction. I test 6 times a day, though not at the mo as ive ran out of test strips😳.

I'm prepared to get my own kit and strips if it's going to help me get in control. A blood test 3 months away seems a bit late if I am choosing carbs that raise my sugars. :(

Sadly, that reaction is not at all unusual and really, really, annoys me because it's incredibly short-sighted. Testing is a vital tool for all diabetics, not just those on insulin..Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now and post a link for the SD Codefree which is I think, the cheapest reliable meter on the market, costs about £13 to buy and around £8 for a pot of 50 strips.

Hi Gail, welcome to the forum 🙂 You are absolutely right, I think that everyone who is motivated to test and knows the reasons why it is worth doing should be given the means to do it - it's just simple logic! Have a browse of our Useful Links thread for links to some good resources that will help you get to grips with things 🙂 If you have any questions, fire away 🙂

So, are you a book lover then? 🙂

As everyone will say on here, try to avoid or greatly reduce bread, rice, pasta & potatoes. There are lots of lovely recipes on here that are low carb. I've had a great time trying new things and experimenting in the kitchen.

Hi Northerner! I'm an English teacher, so they tend to be children's and young adult books! I will be pulling out my cookery books for some inspiration though. In the carbs department, I do have a weakness for cheesecake. That is going to have to be a very rare treat now, I think! I started following weight watchers about a month before diagnosis, which has a new plan that takes sugar into account quite significantly, so I think that will help things along, too.

Northerner, I'm working on a low carb base for a cheescake. I will achieve this as I am an addict too:D.

You might want to try The GL Diet for Dummies - it explains how to select and combine foods that will have a slow and steady impact on your blood sugar levels 🙂

I'm afraid I'm a book addict. Currently 430 pages into War and Peace 😱 Only another 535 pages to go! Last year I re-read a favourite book from my childhood, 'The Silver Sword' by Ian Serraillier - your students might enjoy it 🙂

War and Peace - that's impressive.

I love re-reading old favourites. My new 'to read' stack is usually about 5 high, too, though! I might have to add the GL Diet for Dummies book to the pile as well.

I've been watching the new adaptation. Am I the only one who wants to give their Pierre a good slapping? You could shorten the agony Northe by skipping the battle descriptions, they don't half go on... and on.... and on.....

Don't I know it! 😱 I'm recording the series to watch when I've finished it 🙂 More of a Dostoevsky man to be honest 🙂

Chekov for me, if I have to pick one. Dostoevsky depresses me even more than most Russian authors.

Welcome to the forum Gail. 🙂
