Hi there. I have decided to join this forum as a support for my mum. She doesn’t know I’m doing this but I need to extend my knowledge on Type 2 diabetes. My mum has been diabetic for the last 9 yrs, on metformin. She has never been overweight. The issue now is that she is continually losing weight and has no appetite. I see her now and she is wasting away and it’s not nice to see. I want to try to help her with her weight, she needs to put weight on really. I am just at a loss for her, so I’ll have a read of this site and hopefully get some ideas for her.

Which T2 diabetes friendly foods (i.e apart from sugars and starches) does she like to eat?
Best food for most T2 who want/need to gain weight is either nuts or cheese or both.
That's what I used to stabilise my weight after using Low Carb in order to get into remission

Hi Tbloor, welcome to the forum.

Has your mum been to her GP about this? Loosing weight and loss of appetite can be a symptom of many things so I wouldn't assume that it's due to the diabetes as you typically (though not exclusively) see those symptoms with type 1.

Could be a misdiagnosis of the type of diabetes or other issue that would need to be treated so worth having a check up.

Totally agree with above, it's dr she needs to see not second guesses by members on a Internet forum.

That's good to know @ianf0ster - cheese and nuts are going into my diet from today.

I have the same problem as @Tbloor 's mother, wasting away that is, I was 14 stone 10lbs a year ago and now I'm 10 stone 4lbs, only diagnosed with type 2 eight weeks ago and lost a stone since then.

Anyway good luck with helping your mother Tbloor I wish her well.

From what you have just said I would talk to your GP as you could be misdiagnosed and actually be Type 1 or LADA so it would be a good idea to request the tests for that C-peptide and GAD antibodies.

If there is no apparent reason for weight loss (Type 2 diabetes is more usually associated with weight gain), then the possibility of LADA or Type 1 is certainly worth checking out.
In my case I was cutting out carbohydrates but still eating about the same calories so as to achieve remission and it was only after I was in remission that I carefully and slowly added more protein and fat in the form of nuts and cheese mainly because I find it easy to (over)eat them and doing so doesn't affect my blood glucose.
