Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello I am very new to all this...I am a recently diagnosed type 1diabetic through having Pancreatic cancer 4 years ago.
In the past 6-12 months I had complained to various medical people of my tiredness and severe stomach pains awful thirst plus over 4 stone of weight loss and been told don’t worry nothing is wrong even when my diabetic bloods were found to be in the hundreds.
Finally an emergency stay in hospital several scans and an OGD later someone ....the dietician actually asks the nurse to do my blood sugar....shock and surprise it was 23.1......so now there is Tramadol insulin metformin and glicazide in my daily routine.
Steep learning curve!!!
 
Sorry to hear you have been having such a tough time @lilyb

Do you monitor your blood glucose at home? Does your diabetes require you to take insulin? Do you take Creon? Do you know how much of your pancreas remains?

Hello....I do my blood glucose now...morning and afternoon and I take Humilin s and have been on creon and omeprazole since my humongous operation in 2016 where they took the head of my pancreas and other bits!

That’s interesting! I was expecting you to say you were classified as type 3c - though that isn’t quite so well known among HCPs

Well yes you are probably known as a 3c 🙂 but either way you should not be on glicazide as that's for type 2's 🙂

OH.....give it time it has taken me 12 months to get one person to do anything...there was an awful lot of back peddling going on in hospital......I must say I am feeling so much better with the insulin and tablets but the metformin does Give me diarrhoea.
I must admit though that what you say makes sense
 
Hi and welcome from me too.

Yes. officially you are Type 3c but should be treated the same as a Type 1 and therefore you should really be on a basal/bolus system of insulins rather than Humulin S. At least they have categorized you as Type 1 because many Type 3cs are labelled as Type 2 and not given appropriate treatment.

I would ask to come off the Metformin if it is upsetting your digestive system. Your loss of pancreatic function is probably enough to contend with in that respect and taking gliclazide is literally like flogging a dead horse since it acts to stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin! I can't see how either can be particularly beneficial for you.

How are you managing with the insulin? What are your BG readings like. It is shocking that you were left so long when they must know that this is going to happen at some point down the line. You really should be given the info of what to look out for when your cancer treatment is completed and your notes be marked that insulin will be required at some point in the future. I don't understand why they don't anticipate this situation. We seem to have had a few Type 3cs join the forum recently whose experience has been similar.
