Went into remission 18 months ago and my Type II Diabetes has suddenly returned it seems stronger than before - will need to relearn lessons from 2-3 years ago.

Hi philedinburgh, welcome back.
Do you know what went wrong?
Did you go into remission by cutting calories or by cutting carbs? Or some other way?

Shame Phil. Still got your meter and sufficient test strips to see where your diet and activity levels need adjustment?

Hi philedinburgh, welcome back.

Well I guess it was I became less mobile as eventually I had to have a hip replacement and just after hip was getting back we went into the lock down and I was not going out much being over 70 and diet got less attention in the past 5 months. It was the Carbs I cut down and walked more. So I'll need to cut down the carbs again . I do eat a lot of fruit but will have to cut out bananas and stick to rasps and some oranges - luckily I love chicken but now back to backed potato rather than chips. And I still have my metre and it works after 2 years, Gosh the metre readings are 20-30 and I spent over a year on 5-6. Long way to go - mind you day 3 now.

Are you using new test strips?

Excellent point @Madeline - just glanced at my 'in use' pot, prescribed and supplied last month - the expiry date on them is March 2021. Hence if they were obtained 2 years ago I reckon they stand a very good chance of not giving accurate results.

I’m learning, slowly :D

Welcome back phil!

Sorry your blood glucose has stopped behaving itself :(

Hope we can help you regain your BG management mojo!

Welcome back Phil.

It will be well worth getting some replacement test strips, as they may well be out of date.
The monitoring as you go is so helpful in working out portion sizes and the foods that your body can tolerate.

Hi and welcome back from me too although sorry you need to be here again. Hope your hip replacement has gone well and you are able to resume walking.

I too would suggest you open a new sealed pot of "in date" strips and at least check your old strips against some new ones and ditch if they are not giving similar readings. They are supposed to be discarded a month after opening if I remember rightly as humidity can affect them, as well as using before the expiry date.

You mention having jacket potato instead of chips but you may find that a jacket potato spikes your BG higher than the chips would, because the fat in the chips will slow the rate at which your body breaks them down, whereas the baking process causes the potato starch to dry out and become more "starchy".
Don't fall into the NHS trap of believing that low fat is best. For us diabetics, low carb and higher fat makes much more sense.

Sorry to have to welcome you back Phil  Although you can probably teach us newbies a thing or two, both about what to do and what not to do!
