hello please advise

my husband has come off his lantus by gp and is being managed with novorapid only he has had an infection recently is this ok or should we be carrying on with background insulin. his sugars in the morning are really good 4.9/6.3 its the mid afternoon that his sugars go up and before bed his sugars are 9.5

Hi sooz64, welcome to the forum 🙂 If his levels are that good in the morning then it doesn't look like he needs the lantus. Lantus is used to control the 'background' level of glucose which is constantly being trickled out by the liver in order to provide energy when a person is not eating to keep brain, heart and lungs etc. working 🙂 Novorapid is used to control the blood sugar rises caused by eating carbohydrates, so he might need a small increase in the novorapid with his meals as an infection can raise levels slightly. I would ask his nurse/GP what action to take, if any - if it is just a short term infection a few days with slightly elevated levels shouldn't do any harm, and hopefully he will be well again soon and levels back to normal 🙂

Hi Sooz - I'd agree with Northerner. Novorapid - though it is quicker than Lantus - ain't actually faster than a speeding bullet. It starts to work approx. 10/15/20 minutes after we inject it, and remains active for a good 4 hours, so it does sound as if he needs a bit more before his lunch.

Is he on fixed doses, or does he adjust his dose depending on what he's about to eat?
