Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all, I’m 43 and i was diagnosed with diabetes about 3 weeks ago and yesterday confirmed as type 1. Today was my first full day taking insulin and my emotions are all over the place. It’s all been a bit of a shock to the system. I guess I’m just looking for a bit of reassurance that it gets easier!!!

Welcome to the forum @LyndaS from another late starter with T1 (aged 53).

It is indeed a shock and takes a bit of getting used to, and I still remember being discharged with all my kit. I can assure you that it does get easier. Do remember learning to drive. It all seemed complicated at the start but quickly just becomes automatic, and you are simply watching for the obstacles on the way. That is the best analogy I was given.

A book I have found useful is Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. Ignore the age reference. Type 1 is Type 1. You might want to ignore the chapter on giong to school and starting university. The text is well supported with clear diagrams, and it is regularly updated with the latest tech, so worth getting the most recent edition.

Your head will fill up with questions. Just ask. Nothing is considered silly on here, and I have learnt so much about managing my condition form the wealth of experience on here.

Keep in touch. It will get easier.

Thank you so much, I’m sure I’ll have lots of questions in the near future!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis @LyndaS

Yes! it absolutely will get easier! And it is perfectly natural to feel overwhelmed by your diagnosis. But diabetes is a marathon not a sprint, and even though things can feel all consuming and bewildering at the start, soo. enough you will become the world-leading expert in your individual diabetes.

Because while there are general principles and strategies which apply, diabetes is frustratingly fickle and individual, so you will have a lifelong adventure discovering your own tweaks, adaptations and workarounds to ‘the rules’ 🙂

Many people have found either Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas

or

Think Like a Pancreas’ by Gary Scheiner

Very helpful
