Just to say testing can help to know how certain foods impact your sugar levels, but results are just a snap-shot of what is happening at that moment in time. It can be easy to get hung-up on the numbers, especially if higher than expected or ideal.
That's true, but if you stick to a testing regime - eg, on waking, pre-meal & 2 hours post-meal - and record your results then over time you'll get an idea of whether your numbers are trending downwards (ideally), upwards (not so good) or are flat.

That's good advice - thanks Martin xx

Sorry to hear you were a bit disappointed with your HbA1c, especially after all your hard work, and your terrific weight loss. Must be very frustrating for you :(

If you are considering using a BG meter, you might try the pairing of before and after readings around particular meals to see how your body is responding to what you are eating.

You can take a reading immediately before eating, and again 2hrs after the first bite.

Ideally you’d want to see a rise of no more than 2-3mmol/L between the before and after readings. And eventually you’d want the readings to be 4-7mmol/L before meals and no higher than 8.5mmol/L after meals.

Bigger rises might suggest you need a slightly lower carb load, or a different source of carbs.

Check meals a couple of times before you decide to write them off though - just in case other stuff is going on

Brilliant - thanks for that info, that's very helpful. I have a lot to learn I think but it will be well worth the effort if I can find some tweaks that will make a difference
