Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello to all.

I have recently been diagnosed with Type 2 and to be honest it was a shock as I have had no symptoms and my previous blood test in 2020, just before Lockdown, didn't even have me as prediabetic. Having no symptoms is a blessing and curse, I am grateful that I don't have some of the symptoms, but this makes it harder for my brain to accept that I have diabetes. Is there anyone who is the same and can offer me some advice?

Many thanks

Hi @paddingtonbear and welcome to the forum.
Most Type 2's either have no symptoms or have symptoms which they didn't associate with Diabetes.
Also many people's diet worsened during lockdown and for many the amount of exercise also reduced.
What is your current HBA1C? i If it isn't too much above 48 then a simple small reduction in the carbohydrates in your meals and snacks could make all the difference (for most diet matters more than exercise).
Eat less bread, breakfast cereal, pasta, rice, fruit juices, tropical fruit as well as sugar, honey etc.
Eat more meat, fish, eggs, cheese. greek yogurt. You can eat tree nuts (brazil, walnut, almond, hazel nut cashew since it's not a true nut).
Eggs for breakfast (with or without bacon) is a good start to the day, or if you like something light then plain greek yogurt with a handful of berries or nuts or seeds).

Before my diagnosis I thought that whole Oat porridge was a healthy breakfast, but as soon as I bout a Blood Glucose meter and started testing the effect of my meals I realised it was a really bad one for me!

morning. no advice to offer you but you aren't alone - I'm the same.

I have fairly regular blood tests due to high cholesterol and i've never been diagnosed as prediabetic.
my 2019-2020 results were all ok from a diabetes standpoint
no test in 2021,
last month (07/2022) results were really high and I'm on medication within a few days after double checking all the test results.

for me on the one hand, due to family history, I should have expected it sooner or later and I'm glad it was caught early ish at 39.

on the other hand ... my diet has generally been pretty good in terms of healthy meals lots of salad and veg but also heavy on the carbs (rice bread potato and pasta) but a lot of not so good snacks.

on the other other hand (i don't really have 3 hands) ... my weight has gone up a bit and i've been living a much less active lifestyle since lockdown and wfh.

it would have been nice to know sooner, maybe in 2021 had the tests not been skipped due to the situation and I could have made changes before needing being put on medication but the way I see it now is this.

I know now.
I now have more of a reason to make a change (to my diet, to my activity)
in 2 weeks ive started to loose a bit of weight through some changes to my diet, walking everyday

stick around, read all the articles and ask lots of questions. there are some really nice helpful people around here.

Hi paddingtonbear, welcome to the forum.

Many people have no symptoms and or lead a 'healthy' lifestyle and are diagnosed with diabetes which makes it all the more shocking. You're not alone and hopefully will be able to see some reductions with some consistent lifestyle changes.

If you can, note down your HbA1c number, your average blood sugar reading over the last 3 months, so you can track your progress.

We've got lots of info on the site so do have a look around and let us know if we can help in any way.
