Evening All,

Looking for some reassurance I suppose. I've been a Type 2 Diabetic (diagnosed) for the last 5 years.

At present I take Max dose of Metformin, a high dose of gliclizide and also stiglipton but recently, no matter what I do my bloods are so high.

I had to fast for over 24hrs in preparation for a small medical procedure and the lowest my bloods went were 12.

I have just taken them before bed and they are 24.1.

Regardless of what I eat, drink or exercise they are high - average is probably 14-18.

My GP is aware and doesn't seem overly bothered.

I'm concerned about long term harm and also am off on holiday in a couple of days (FloridA) and am concerned about bloods remaining high and becoming unwell.

Hi @midweekpurple welcome, hope you find some helpful advice through the forum
what kind of things are you eating and what was your most recent HbA1c test showing ?

Hi @midweekpurple , and welcome to the forum.
I can really see how concerned you are, and honestly, with those numbers staying so persistently high despite medication and lifestyle efforts, your worry is completely valid, especially with a trip ahead of you. It must be frustrating to feel like you’re doing everything you can but not seeing any movement.
It sounds like your current treatment plan might not be working as well as it once did, and it’s reasonable to expect more support from your GP, especially with such high readings. If your GP isn't taking your concerns seriously, it might be worth asking for a referral to a diabetes specialist or requesting to speak with another GP in the practice. You deserve to feel confident about your care.
As for your upcoming holiday - it’s good that you're thinking ahead. Travel can sometimes make blood sugars trickier to manage due to time zones, meals, heat, and activity changes. If you haven’t already, it might help to make a plan for how to monitor and manage things while you’re away, and to carry something like a printed summary of your medications and condition in case you need medical help while travelling.
There have been similar situations here on the forum, where users haven't felt supported by their medical professionals, so I'd encourage you to push for that extra support and advocate for yourself as best you can. I hope you can still enjoy your trip, and fingers crossed that you’re able to get a care plan that works better for you soon.
Take care, and let us know how you're getting on.

Most recent HbA1c was 79 about 1 month ago (up from 63). Mostly protein and salads at the moment with some carbs - makes no difference. Ironically I had a donut and got my lowest reading for ages

Thanks for the response. I have asked for a referral but can't be seen until Jan 2026! I've requested this be pushed through as urgent ... So fingers crossed! I've also managed to get a medication review this morning so ...

Have you ever had tests for Type 1? I would have thought a fasting reading of 12 is very high with all the meds you are currently taking.

Believe me, I'm no expert but I think you need to push your GP for more tests or try and get a continuous glucose monitor to see what's happening.

Hi @midweekpurple and welcome to the Forum 🙂. Soon after I was diagnosed I asked to be referred to a consultant as I felt that I wasn't getting the specialist care from my GP. That's terrible that you've been told it will be 2026, with continuous high bloods I would definitely push for a referral! You could get a free trail GCM from Abbot (lasts 2 weeks), I'm sure you would find it really useful 🙂 https://www.freestyle.abbott/uk-en/getting-started/sampling.html.

Do let us know how you got on with that.
It might be useful to emphasise your problem with high blood glucose to keep a food diary of everything you eat and drink with some blood glucose readings of before you eat and after 2 hours as well as fasting levels. It will provide a back up and evidence to try to escalate your referral.

Thanks both. I've had another med added in to rotation for whilst I'm away, and had another adjustment, and then have another appointment to restart rybelsus or start something new in the same family. I'm feeling more positive and less concerned xx

That does sound a bit more promising and I hope it will allow you to enjoy your holiday. I would just check your travel insurance to make sure you are covered should anything be amiss whilst you are away.

THanks. I've paid to change my insurance to better cover myself as it is Florida!

I'm glad you're feeling more positive, hope you have a wonderful holiday 🙂

That’s great news @midweekpurple , glad the appointment went well, and that you are feeling more positive.

Enjoy your Florida adventure, and let us know how you get on with the new med.
