Hi I'm really relieved to find this group. Diagnosed last week with T2. With score 103. I have been prescribed metformin and this will be reviewed in 3 months. I have been advised to avoid food with more than 5g of sugar per 100g and to try to eat healthily.
I think I have got over initial panic and feel I need to be doing more I have read lots of ideas on the different threads. But can anybody point me to best place to start.

I have found it really helpful to see people reducing blood sugar and coming off medicine.
 
Welcome to the forum, and the club no one really wants to join.
Seeking out the highest carb value foods you eat would be a good way to start, then either reducing or replacing entirely with lower carb options will soon make a difference (with any luck)
I am not sure that avoiding things with more than 5 percent sugar will be all that helpful if you are eating foods high in starch. I need to look at the carbohydrate content of foods, as that is where the glucose in the blood comes from. Starch is easily and quickly broken down and absorbed, becoming glucose and other monosaccharides.
 
Hi @GMR and welcome to the forum 🙂 As well as cutting down high sugar content food, high content carbs are also best avoided. That's your spuds, bread, rice and pasta. I just went cold turkey and cut them all out when I was diagnosed last April but I've found out since that a gradual reduction is better (through this lovely forum!) as a rapid drop can cause other issues, such as problems with eyesight. Fortunately for me, that didn't happen but it just goes to show I should have researched before doing it and found this forum earlier :D

You might need an illuminated magnifying glass for that - the number of carbs is usually there somewhere, but difficult to read - unlike the totally useless traffic light system which doesn't show the level of carbs, only sugars.

I'm glad to hear that you're over the initial panic as that period of time can be really upsetting. As with most things, diabetes tends to be a personal journey so it's important to test yourself 2 hours after you've eaten to start with so you understand how certain foods impact your body, from there you can make choices that work for you.
