Hi, I've been stalking the forum for a while and already got a lot of help but figured it was time to join properly and say hi. And thank you for the help.

The short version of my story, recently gone to a low carb diet with help from the info on here and my health is improving, so thank you all.

The longer version...I was diagnosed type 2 around 10 years ago and for quite a few years I managed it very well. I was a full time carer for my mum and so cooked nice healthy regular meals for us both, just cut out sugary foods and cut down on snacks. I had no help from my GP, no Blood glucose monitor, but I had an annual blood test and it didn't seem too bad.

A year ago my mum passed away, just before lockdown, I suffer with depression anyway so my mum's death shortly followed by lockdown kind of messed me up, no incentive or motivation to cook so I was living on sandwiches, junk food, crisps, pasties and ready meals. The last few months I've been feeling really ill I kept talking to doctors on the phone but got nowhere, the most popular diagnosis was long Covid, which did seem odd because as far as I know I haven't had Covid.

So a search online made me wonder if it was high blood sugar. I bought a cheap monitor and found my sugars to be 21.5 I finally got to speak to a helpful doctor who recommended a low carb diet which is when I panicked. I love carbs. Then I found this forum, read a lot, changed my diet and my blood sugars are now generally now testing just above the normal range. Not perfect but nowhere near the twenties.

So again, thanks to the forum and its members you have been a godsend to me.

Welcome @Hildark and glad you've come out stalking mode and joined us! 🙂 Sounds like you are doing really well. Yes, I also panicked when I realised I had to give up my beloved carbs, but it's not so bad after all, as you've clearly discovered. I think lockdown took its toll on a lot of people, and losing your mum must have been incredibly hard.

Lovely to have you on board, and shout out if you have any questions

Welcome to the forum @Hildark .
So sorry to hear of your loss of your Mum.
Very pleased you have joined and I hope that you find all the experience on here useful.

Ask any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here.

Hi and welcome to the forum @Hildark, thank you for sharing your story with us. 🙂

Good job being able to bring your sugar levels down despite what you were going through the past year. I'm sorry to hear about your mum, I do hope you're feeling better with your mental health. It's nice to have you on board!

Welcome to the forum @Hildark

Condolences for the loss of your Mum. Grieving can take a while to process and manifest in all sorts of physical as well as psychological changes and challenges.

Well done on the terrific reduction in your BG levels, the positive changes you have made, and it’s nice to have you ‘de lurked’ 🙂

Hope the forum can continue to provide you with a positive source of support going forwards 🙂
