Hi all, my 10 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with Type 1 a couple of weeks ago. We are managing it well but we want to speak to people and meet people who are going through the same thing, as it has been a lot for us to take in. Especially her. It's hard at the minute with the current situation because there isn't any meet ups or events. But hopefully this will be a good place to start! X

Hello @EllieT1
Welcome to the forum to you and your daughter.
It is certainly a difficult time for you both, and there are many parents on the forum that have had to deal with this, and I'm sure will be able to help you. I will copy some of them in on this message, and hope that some of them may be along soon.

Welcome to the forum Ellie.

Sorry to hear about your daughter @EllieT1 :(

It must be very difficult trying to get the right level of support and access to appointments with the current restrictions :(

Glad to hear that you are managing well so far.

Many folks on the forum have found Ragnar Hanas’s book Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People to be a very helpful overview of T1, and very handy to refer back to.

You might also find some helpful hints and pointers in Adrienne’s ‘essential guide’ for parents of T1s which was posted when her daughter was 11 (I believe now studying medicine at university!)

So glad that you have joined our friendly community. Do ask away with any questions you have, and feel free to share the ups and downs, frustrations and joys of BG juggling as they unfold 🙂

Hi and welcome. My daughter is now 10 and was diagnosed a little over 18 months ago. Happy to chat and to put them in touch with each other.

Welcome to the forum @EllieT1 . Very pleased that you have found us.

I saw this posted in the parents section. These events have been put in place at present as it is not possible to hold the family weekends. This involves some of the volunteers who live with T1 and you can quiz them about their experiences.
Topic: Life Beyond Diabetes

When: Monday, 9 November - 7-8.30pm

Panellists: Volunteers living with type 1, discussing their own experiences

The link to sign up to any of our panel sessions is here: https://eu.eventscloud.com/esurvey/200041498

I would certainly recommend the book T1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. That @everydayupsanddowns mentioned. It is so clear and up to date.

Also just fire away with any questions that you have. Nothing is considered silly on here.

Hi @EllieT1, welcome to the forum.

Diabetes UK support a number of local groups all over the country, some are operated with families in mind. You can find your nearest group on the page, https://www.diabetes.org.uk/how_we_help/local_support_groups

The list is by no means exhaustive, so there may be a group near you that operates independently. Your hospital team may know if there is one near you.

In the meantime, if you want to know anything, don't be afraid to ask. No question is too silly. 🙂

Hello to you and your daughter, welcome to the forum @EllieT1 🙂
