Hello, I discovered by accident that my HbA1c score was higher than it should be at 56. I have no symptoms, I'm fairly fit (I cycle regularly) and although I could lose a couple of pounds I'm not overweight. I'm 74. I've cut down on carbohydrates (so am gradually losing those extra pounds) and am not sure what else I can do. Am going to ask on another thread about glucose meters.

Hi Maris - that's the best thing you can do to help yourself. All diabetics have to do all they can for themselves ALWAYS not just right now, so it will be an extremely helpful investment - Lord knows when any of us will be able to have another HbA1c test.

Hi @Maris Piper - welcome to the forum. If you look at where the 'Newbies Say Hello' forum is, above that is a thread - giving loads of useful info specifically directed at newly diagnosed, go in there and scroll down to T2. You will find loads of info relating to you and glucose monitoring meters.

Dont forget to check the kitchen cupboards for the hidden sugars in things like ketchup/sauces etc. You will need to get into the habit when shopping (If you can find anything on the shelves that it!! 🙄) for 'TOTAL' carbs of food. The lower the better.

Many resources on here to help you - i found this site quite helpful when i first started altering my diet. https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb

Good luck and please come back with any questions you may have - someone is always around to help you.

Welcome to the forum @Maris Piper

Great to hear that you are fit and active, and congratulations on the weight loss so far.

For a bit more background information, you might like to browse the ‘useful links’ thread which is a mine of helpful information - useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes

Members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book, as very helpful starting points.

Good luck, and keep asking questions!
